Disposal of needles, lancets, cartridges and pens

Hi, I have a prescription from my GP for a sharps bin which, when full I have to take it to the surgery and then get another prescription for a replacement, and so it goes on, possibly ad infinitum!

    New use for Metformin?

Not seen this anywhere else in these forums. A report in the New Scientist last week says that a team from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York are running a five year clinical trial to test for the effects on ageing, general health and cognition. As I read it, it would seem that...

    Courgette shortage

We used to grow courgettes, love them, but couldn't keep up with them! Even with just a couple of plants. Our neighbours soon started refusing yet another freebee. Unfortunately, at this time of year they don't grow here, so we have to rely on the supermarkets.

    Peanut butter

If you are worried about the contents of bought peanut butter, it is easy to make your own. Put de-skined peanuts into a food processor, whiz until a fine powder, add some oil, slowly, (rapeseed, olive or other oil to your own taste). Add a teaspoon of salt and/or honey, blend until you have the...

Intermittent waking during the night ?

Funnily enough, I don't get the vivid dreams that I used to either! Not sure if that's a good thing or not :meh:

Intermittent waking during the night ?

I used to wake up in the night drenched in sweat, having poor temperature control. Then last year, pre diagnosis, we changed our bedding, first to a wool duvet, then to all cotton covers. Since then no sweating! I also used to snore and my legs twitched at random times during the night, much to...

    I've been bad this Christmas!

I think the jury is still out on how much harm a small amount of sugar can do. I guess it would be difficult to evaluate in chocolate size pieces! That said as long as it's not a habit then who knows? I stopped testing for a few days so I don't know if the few chocs I had over Xmas had much...

Type 1: Does alcohol effect blood sugars

I don't know about cider, but a couple of glasses of red wine each night with my meal has no effect on my blood glucose level :):). I am lucky that at the moment I'm not on any medication, just the LCHF diet (or more accurately way of life).

    Type 2 Bg levels

Hi Emily, I found my bg readings confusing at first but the more I tested and built up a pattern the clearer it all became. I also keep a log of the readings and the food I eat so I can compare the two - anything that spikes or raises my bg is out!

    Cannot go on.

Hi Uf, I know you are feeling low right now, but as one who 40 odd years ago felt the same as you do, I can say its worth never giving up. Please seek help and hopefully you will find light at the end of the dark tunnel you are in. Be positive and look to your loving family you mentioned. I know...

    Type 2 ---hello all,newbie here!

Hi twinkle-57, like you I'm new to the forum, but as others have said the best advice is eat to the meter. I did a lot of browsing on this site, picking up info from the savvy people here. There are also a lot of good web sites to be found on the nutrition threads. I have used them to change my...

Is you is, or is you ain't?

Thank you all for your comments and advice. I love the rambling nature of the thread! I know that for us all it is a never ending fight which we can try to overcome as best we can with the support of each other. Over the past few months the advice given by many of the forum members to others has...

Is you is, or is you ain't?

With even the Doc mixing terms it's no surprise that people like myself who are new to diabetes get confused!

Thanks for the replies, I must admit I've been lurking on this site for months and it has taken til now to post anything. I have learnt a huge amount from you all - so much more sense than the "official " advice!!

Is you is, or is you ain't?

Hi everybody. In May I asked my doctor for a blood test as a check-up, and the results were a tad confusing. It was a non-fasting test (an hour after breakfast) and gave a BG of 11.4 and a HbA1c of 5.9. Doctor declared I was borderline pre-diabetic. I was sent to see the Diabetic Specialist...
