Hi everybody. In May I asked my doctor for a blood test as a check-up, and the results were a tad confusing. It was a non-fasting test (an hour after breakfast) and gave a BG of 11.4 and a HbA1c of 5.9. Doctor declared I was borderline pre-diabetic. I was sent to see the Diabetic Specialist Nurse who after a few questions about my lifestyle declared me to be Type 2 Diabetic. Back to doctor, another blood test - fasting, BG 6.2. He said I'm "glucose intolerant" In the meantime I discovered this site and decided to go for the LCHF diet and have lost about 12lbs (down to 9st 10lbs) with a BMI of 21.5. Great advice on here! Another blood test 2 weeks ago , same HbA1c and fasting BG of 6.3 . My main problem seems to be a high fasting BG, 90 day average of 6.2, any advice on how to reduce this? I'm not sure if I'm pre-diabetic or not.

@Rustytypin - Hello :).

Here is the HBA1C Categories.

Normal. Below 42 mmol = 6.0% and below.
Prediabetic. 42 to 47 mmol. = 6.0 to 6.4%
Diabetes. 48mmol or over = 6.5% and over.

Thanks for the replies, I must admit I've been lurking on this site for months and it has taken til now to post anything. I have learnt a huge amount from you all - so much more sense than the "official " advice!!

Hi. A fasting blood test doesn't tell you much due to liver dumping of glucose. Testing 2 hours after a few meals will tell you more. You need to be below 8.5 mmol to be non-diabetic. BTW being 'glucose intolerant' means you are pre-diabetic or diabetic - the term is meaningless in that sense. It sounds like your low-carb diet may have helped you so keep at it.

With even the Doc mixing terms it's no surprise that people like myself who are new to diabetes get confused!

This community is the best. Although I have noticed there is a distinct lack of free cookies in the break room..;)

Hello Rustytypin, and welcome to the forum.... cookies, as that young man mist should know are never free... they are high carb unless made specially ;)

Hi mist and ellagy! someone said cookies over there and I was instantly alerted to the possibility that I might get one over here.
Wait, did you guys eat them all already?

Before I could walk I learned to climb to the top shelf to get the cookies and chocolate hidden there.
