    Pushing a diabetic TOO FAR???

Where do your in-laws live? or did I miss it in your post? I'm a little concerned about the "eat only apples", as they do contain carbohydrate and may spike her blood glucose levels. Nor does it do anyone much good to live on just one food for any length of time. Apples are very acidic. If you...

    Grapes - yes or no?!

You're probably craving the sugar content! Seriously though, 100g of grapes has between 17g and 22g carb (red are higher than green), so for someone like me on a very-low-carb diet, that's about half my daily carb intake. So I don't eat them. In fact, I haven't eaten them since...

First 3 monthly review - HbA1C, Lipids and Diet.

My GP thinks that the Total:HDL ratio is more important than the Total by itself. The target for this is below 5:1, and preferably around 3.5:1. This should be shown on your lipid profile print-out. I get the lab results for all my blood tests - I find it's worth it and very often don't need to...

    Thrush and type 2 diabetic

Natural live yoghurt - eat it, and also apply it to the affected area. It balances the bacteria. High blood sugar is often the cause of thrush in diabetics. You need to cut down on your carbohydrate intake somewhat - all the carbohydrate we eat is turned into sugar in our blood, and some of it...

Don't involve yourself in the blame game.

I hope you go on okay, Heather. Let us know what the doctor says :D . Viv 8)

    Blood results. Normal level???

NICE guidelines for blood glucose levels, Type 2 diabetes: fasting/before meals - 4 - 7 mmol/l 2 hours after food - less than 8 mmol/l. Some of us try to be within the non-diabetic guidelines, which are: fasting/before meals - 3.5 - 5.5 2 hours after - less than 8. Not everyone can manage...

    Still confused...

You could perhaps have a look at Dr Richard Bernstein's book "Diabetes" - he's been a Type 1 since childhood (now in his 70s at least!) and has managed to turn many of his complication round by going low-carb. He has good information on managing the transition. I think he has a web-site too -...

    Weight gain and Complications

Just to add that I have joints problems and lumbar spinal stenosis so I can do very little exercise - even walking to the shop is a problem - but I can still lose weight! I'm a Type 2, controlled by low-carb diet and Metformin, so you really need help from a low-carb Type 1 to tell you how to...

    Errrmm Constipation

Flavoured yoghurts are high in sugar = carbs. You need the plain "live" yoghurt, which is low-carb because no sugar. Sweeten with (eg) powdered Splenda. I always go for sheep's or goat's milk yoghurt if I can - it's better for human digestion than cow's milk, apparently. I think I'll have a go...

    Still cannot get an answer

It all depends on how many carbs you intend to eat on a daily basis. If you are trying to stick to a very low carb diet, 30g daily or less, then you need to get most of those from your fresh vegetable intake. See Viv's Modified Atkins Diet , a Sticky Thread in the Low-carb section of the forum...

What is the Truth......the truth is.......

This may be the law for Type 1s, Prosperity 89, but it doesn't apply to Type 2 diabetics who are not taking hypo-inducing medication. I rang the DVLA on diagnosis, (Type 2 on Metformin) and they weren't interested. For reassurance - i have recently lost a close friend, diabetic Type 1, at the...

    Metformin and statins

Many people can take statins with no problems, but others find they can have bad side-effects - including muscle and joint pain. Why not Google "statin side-effects" and have a good read. Also Google "spacedoc.net" and have a read of him. See what you think and then go and talk it through with...

    Errrmm Constipation

Plenty of water - at least 2 litres daily. Natural live yoghurt, unsweetened. I soak a dessertspoon of flax seeds and stir that in. If you really must sweeten it, I use Splenda powder. Stewed rhubarb - ditto the Splenda; eat with yoghurt. Dark chocolate, the blacker the better. 90% proof if...

    Husband newly diagnosed

Hi! and welcome to you both. Being diagnosed with diabetes is always a shock, particularly if you've never even suspected you might have it, and it is difficult to get your head round it at first. In fact, some people go into denial (including me!) but the quicker you get to accept it, the...

    splits in toes

I had splits between my toes which took a long time to heal and which would easily break open and bleed. This only started when I had to stop having baths and could only shower instead. It's not as easy to reach my feet in the shower as it was in the bath. Sometimes I put the plug in and give...

    newly diagnosed, but confused.

If you have been running high blood glucose for a while it's not unusual to get the feelings of a hypoglycaemic episode (a hypo) when your BGs start coming down to a level that would be okay for someone who has had good control of their BGs for some time. Some of your earlier "funny turns" were...

I'm Type 2 not on insulin, so I don't feel I can help you much - but I'm bumping this up in case a low-carbing Type 1 comes along :D Viv 8)

    personal question. please answer

You could well be going through the menopause, Cherylle. It's not unusual to have the odd bleed if you are one of those who doesn't stop instantly. However, it's never wise to ignore vaginal bleeding when you think your periods have stopped. Mention it to your doctor; at the same time ask for a...

Looking to lose 20 lbs in 10 weeks

You're doing very well, Mike - whatever works for you! I'm having a bad time at present - the weather is giving me carb cravings and I'm eating too much bread :( . so no weight loss. I want to get back to at least my pre-Christmas weight before I go for my next blood tests at the end of...
