Have you had trouble getting test strips?

Frances, thank goodness for your doctor and thank goodness for one who doesn't use "one-size-fits-all", but treats the individual. And has taken the trouble to know you. I think I agree with him that not everybody is suited to self-monitoring of BGs; but how are we to know which is which if we...

    Share Your Progress!

Well done, Vonbon! keep at it. Just one word - don't cut out the butter from your sandwich. It helps slow down the metabolising of the bread, so you don't spike quite as high or quickly. My occasional sandwiches consist of butter and mayonnaise with a little chicken salad - on wholemeal. :lol...

Have you had trouble getting test strips?

I contacted Dr Rowan Hillson, who is the National Clinical Director for DIabetes, about Type 2s and test strips, and got the following as a reply: http://www.diabetes.nhs.uk/search_results/index.php?search=self+monitoring+of+blood+glucose The paper you are looking for is: Self monitoring of...

    4.9 blood glucose today

Have a look at Viv's Modified Atkins Diet, which is a sticky thread on the Low-carb section of the forum. It works for me. If I go over about 50g daily my BGs go up; if i go over 70g daily i start to put on weight! I've lost over 60lb so far (3 years; I'm taking it slowly), and my lipid...

Looking to lose 20 lbs in 10 weeks

Day-to-day variations mainly reflect fluid retention, I believe. Once a week at the same time gives a truer picture. I believe that in hospitals they used to weigh patients first thing in the morning or at 16:00 hours - apparently the times when you're lightest! This may well be an old wives'...

Have you had trouble getting test strips?

Well done elviscole! those BG readings are excellent :D I'm afraid I've let a few more carbs creep into my diet and I'm usually in the 5s these days. If it ever gets a bit warmer life will get easier. Do you keep a record of your readings? It might be worth taking a list of them with you...

    type2 and "hypos "

Hi Lesleyr If you have been running high blood glucose levels for some time you will sometimes get hypo feelings at a level (eg 4) that is not technically a hypo. My advice (though I am no expert, as I only take Metformin) is to get a 6-pack of small bottles of Lucozade and also to get some...

Have you had trouble getting test strips?

Hindsight is an exact science, but it would have been useful also to have a Type1/Type2 tickbox. It now looks as if 37% of us have no problem getting strips; but how many of those are Type 1s? Viv 8)

Have you had trouble getting test strips?

Good news for all you Type 1s today - look at the news items on the Home page. So you know your practice has had a letter telling them to give you your strips, and you can argue from a position of strength. Now we must lobby for Type 2s . . . Viv 8)

    New diagnosis Type2 information leaflets

Hi Tony Yes, I'm pretty sure the "doom and gloom" approach was scare tactics, but it was a classic example of "one-size-fits-all" rather than choosing the appropriate approach for each patient. In fairness, the DM specialist GP hardly ever sees me, so doesn't know me well. Rather than seeing...

    Eye problem.

Doesn't sound as if it's related to conjunctivitis, more a rupture of one of the small blood vessels situated inside the eye just within/below the cornea ("O" level Biology is rushing back as I type - I enjoyed "the eye"). If it's any comfort, my father used to get small ones and they...

Have you had trouble getting test strips?

Elviscole, don't worry about pre-meal BG readings in the 4s. I try to keep mine within the non-diabetic range, which is between 3.5 and 5.5 before meals/fasting . . . of course, I do have lapses! I was given a meter, strips and lancets on diagnosis, and I get 50 strips every 4 weeks on...

To Medicate or not to Medicate

My instinct would be to stop the Metformin and then re-introduce it, one a week, then 2 a week, etc, when I was feeling very much better and the "through-put" had stopped. But do eat something un-upsetting, eg eggs, soup, fish - and keep drinking. However, I am not qualified to suggest...

Stress, how badly can it effect your numbers?

Stress can certainly affect your blood glucose levels - I was diagnosed during my 24th house move, the most stressful one I have ever done  . I don't know how much it puts your levels up, but I can imagine that the sort of long-term, grinding stress that you eve take home with you...

    men's health

Maybe because most women live/have lived with a man and take time to understand them? Whereas, in my experience, when it comes to women's health, most men switch off their ears and stick their heads in the sand! Or have I just been unlucky?  :D Viv 8)
