Is metformin good for your brain?

I have every intention of coming off both statins and metformin, that is why I have been doing a lot of research. I ask a lot of questions, but often get unhelpful answers. My opinion is that statins reduce cholesterol, which is not good as cholesterol is actually beneficial. Also that...

Is metformin good for your brain?

Well, he did use the word 'definitely', he had no need to. I have seen discussions before on ketogenic diets and whether enough glucose would be produced for the brain, which apparently can't function on ketones alone. The answer was always 'but the liver will produce sufficient glucose via...

Is metformin good for your brain?

I am diabetic type 2 and take statins and metformin. I am on a strict ketogenic diet, carbs < 20g/day. I asked Dr Jason Fung on Diet Doctor the following: When in ketosis I may be relying on gluconeogenesis to produce glucose for my brain. If the Metformin I am taking inhibits glucose...

    Low Carb Forum Recommended Lists

I've seen several quotes recently from forum members referring to their GPs running trial low carb groups. I thought it would be a good idea to list these and hopefully encourage them

    Low Carb Forum Recommended Lists

My suggestion is that these lists would be made up from suggestions by forum members; I am not expecting Diabetes UK to endorse them.

    Low Carb Forum Recommended Lists

I've been on LCHF for about 3 months now and I have learnt a lot, especially from this forum. However, I found it a little difficult to find some info because there is so much of it, so I wonder if anyone would support the idea of lists we could vote for to produce "top-ten" categories in a...

    Feeling ill

Sorry, but this is a Low Carb Diet forum, I don't see any pressure, unintentional or not, to adopt a certain limit. I am on 25g carbs, having recently increased from 15, but I can see me changing again as I find my balance.

    Feeling ill

A week is not really a long time and most of us have suffered with carb flu at the beginning, it will soon pass. Best thing is to take half a teaspoon of salt in warm water every morning. This helps replace salt lost through peeing more than usual. Also drink lots of water.

    Feeling ill

Actually, this information about the brain needing a lot of carbs is not exactly correct. There is a good article about this on Diet Doctor. The brain does just fine on ketones. What few carbs it needs are produced in large enough quantities by the liver without any dietary carbs.

    Reading nutrition info

Well, it's not quite that simple. It's not the sugars bit that is confusing, but the fibre and 'sugar alcohols' (whatever they are) that are handled differently by different manufacturers, mainly from the USA. There, they like to refer to nett carbohydrates, ie taking the fibre off, but we are...

    Question about salt & minerals

Thanks bulkbiker. I see it does contain magnesium stearate, but so do they all as far as I can see, it's some form of anti-caking agent they add deliberately, but I've no idea why it might be a bad thing. I have already noticed that the salt in water every morning helps a lot, so I'll see how...

    Question about salt & minerals

Hi. I suppose I am looking at this from a different perspective in that I am on 15g carbs/day. Even lettuce contains carbs, so a salad can be quite significant and cherry tomatoes are one of the highest carb constituents. I do eat cherry tomatoes, but limit it to a few at a time, say 3.

    Question about salt & minerals

I'm not surprised, actually. At that rate, you don't need many to add up quickly. Like so many foods, these have been developed to contain extra sugar.

    Question about salt & minerals

Hi I see you here regularly, so I know you give good advice. Do you mind telling me what brand of magnesium citrate you take, please? I have been told that magnesium stearate is bad, so want to avoid if poss. Regards Brian

    Best Carb counter app?

Hi I don't use an app because I can do everything I need on my own spreadsheet. However, when I need dietary info, I go to the Fat Secret website, it's free and pretty comprehensive. When the macronutrients I want aren't listed, I go to the manufacturer's website or one of the big retailer's...

My new toy - aka the Ketonix "breathalyzer"

I bought a Ketonix after reading the reviews here. After a bit of trouble setting the thing up, I find it easy to use and now test regularly. However, I am not impressed with the response from the Ketonix support. Although they were very good helping me get started, they have just ignored all...

    The Wonderful Low-carb Courgette...

Hi I too was amazed at the versatility of courgette recently. I tried a Waitrose card recipe for Ham Cheese and Courgette omelette https://www.waitrose.com/content/waitrose/en/home/recipes/recipe_directory/h/ham-cheddar-omelettewithgratedcourgette.html This involved grated courgette, but I'm...
