    Blood Sugar when ill

Hi Craig, I don't have any advice but you are not alone in this! I have also just had my first experience of this as I was only diagnosed last May. I have had a really bad cold and had to put my basal up from 16 to 24 and found if I ate anything carby I had to take double the amount of Novorapid...

Anything learned from Freestyle Libre Use?

I have also had one since just before Christmas! - I never knew I experienced a small dawn phenomenon as it isn't large enough to really see via finger pricks - I now treat hypos much less aggressively as I can see if it the bottom of the curve or looking like I am going down further. I have...

Can NovoRapid and Levemir That's in Use Be Put Back in a Fridge?

Hi guys, I am currently reading Think Like a Pancreas and that says that keeping insulin in the fridge makes it more prone to air bubbles and less comfortable to inject because of feeling cold - so I assume as long as you are careful about not injecting bubbles there wouldn't be a problem.

    Pre work out snacks??

I find a protein shake made with milk useful as it releases slowly and doesn't sit too heavily. It has the added plus of making me feel less sore the next day so I can exercise more frequently. Afterwards I will have a sachet of porridge, although more expensive I do find them useful for portion...

    Question - strange drained feeling?

I also have this, it tends to be if I have had either a high carb or higher GI meal/snack. In fact I had a mince pie about an hour ago and I'm feeling spaced out and a bit sick now. I also put it down to my levels either going high or changing quickly. There is only so much you can do to match...

    Swollen Ankles

Thanks for your comments so far, I haven't changed any medication recently. I might start with my DSN rather than GP first as I expect my GP will say it is diabetes related or nothing to worry about.

    Swollen Ankles

Hi all, For the past couple of days my ankles have swollen up. My blood sugars are ok, although I have had two readings in the past week of 13 after eating out and drinking a bit too much wine, which I corrected for. Last HbA1c was 5.8%, I go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week and my BMI is in the...

Trial of therapy to restore insulin production in Type 1's

It is quite frustrating as those that want me cured but are not too knowledgeable are overly optimistic and enthusiatic, I felt really mean telling Mum I'd believe it when it is offered to me (and works!).

TYPE 1: My Transformation From "Overweight" to "Obese"

For the low carb amounts of 30-40g, are you including carbs from salad and green veg in this?

"Best" things doctors have said to you

I went for my DECs eye screen, my first since getting diagnosed in May. The nurse, proudly wearing a diabetes specialist nurse badge, exclaimed - 'how can you have diabetes, you are young and slim!'. I am assuming she didn't specialise in type 1 diabetes...

    Type 1 vs Type 2

I was diagnosed in May and people's perceptions seem to be that type 1 is the 'bad kind', but I agree with the previous comments that neither is a walk in the park! There is also the common idea that type 2 is caused purely by poor diet and exercise, and while that is going to have contributed...

Vegetarian diabetic with a nut allergy

I like the Quorn mini sausages. Hard boiled eggs also work well for me.

    Updated NICE T1 guidelines published

Whilst I agree with the earlier post that diet (LCHF) is probably the best way to get a low HbA1C, I do feel like I am flying blind with finger testing. I enjoy exercising - I ran marathons before diagnosis and would like to again - and I am finding it difficult to follow LCHF when I have to...

    Supporting partner

Don't take it personally when he does get stressed and takes it out on you! I had a go at my husband when I had a hypo early on and he offered me ice cream, not understanding I would need sweets/ glucose tablets first. I agree with not making a fuss about food, and if he does/doesn't want to eat...

    glucose strips

I think 7-8 sounds fine and is in line with what I use. I was told to test every half an hour when doing exercise, so an hour's workout is 3 strips on top of the basic 4 if you are not say eating a meal straight after your workout. I also test every time I feel 'funny' and I like to test before...

Type 1 Struggling with my pre-bed target of 8.5

Thanks all. I can't move my evening meal any earlier as I don't get home from work until 7, and I don't want to go to bed later as I need my sleep and get up at 6. It is just frustrating being set guidelines that don't seem to work for me. I have no problem changing things again in the future if...

Type 1 Struggling with my pre-bed target of 8.5

Hi all I was diagnosed with Type 1 on 1st June so this is still all very new and I am looking for input on how other people manage their pre-bed levels. I have been told my my consultant that I should be at least 8.5 before I go to bed. I currently eat my dinner at about 7:30pm and go to bed at...

Newly Diagnosed but was trying to conceive

I am in the same boat. We were just about to start trying for a family but were waiting to find out why I had been feeling ill for 5 months which turned out to be the type 1 diagnosis at the beginning of June! I am 30 and while I know loads of people do have babies later there is a lot of...

Type 1: What are your HbA1c test results?

I was 14.4% at diagnosis on 1st June, down to 8.8% on 6th July. Really glad it is all going in the right direction!
