Hi all,

For the past couple of days my ankles have swollen up. My blood sugars are ok, although I have had two readings in the past week of 13 after eating out and drinking a bit too much wine, which I corrected for. Last HbA1c was 5.8%, I go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week and my BMI is in the normal range.

I am drinking to thirst and don't think I am dehydrated as I don't have dry lips and my pee is pale. I probably did get a bit dehydrated earlier in the week but not for the past couple of days.

My only previous experience of swollen ankles was pre diagnosis, this was the symptom that made me finally go to my gp!

Has anyone got any experience of this?

Thanks

Go and see your GP, there is obviously something not right.

A visit to gp will put you at ease. I had an edema which was related to an operation, not just my ankles but my whole lower body, I was surprised that the doc was not worried told me to eat as little salt as possible, rest your feet on a stool when sitting, take long walks. The key thing is to eat 6g of salt or less a day to get back to normal.

Have you started or changed any medication recently? I changed blood pressure tablets from Atenolol to Amlodipine and eventually noticed swollen ankles gradually worsening over 10-12 weeks. When I mentioned it to my specialist, I was changed to Slocinx XL (Doxazosin) where in the space of less than two days my feet, ankles and calves swelled (along with urticarial) and I clearly had an allergic reaction. The second reaction was obvious to me, but the first was so gradual that I simply didn't link the medication and reaction.

Thanks for your comments so far, I haven't changed any medication recently. I might start with my DSN rather than GP first as I expect my GP will say it is diabetes related or nothing to worry about.

Yes swollen ankles are the most common side effect of Amlodipine. When I started on it for high blood pressure I was taking 10mg of that with 10mg of Lisinopril,,,..my doctor thinks two medications together work better than one... and my ankles and feet were swelling I told the doctor and she reduced the dosage to 5mg of Amlodipine and increased the Lisiniprol to 15mg and I never had any more problems with the swelling 10 years on I am still taking the same dosage and my BP is still stable
