    Bolus/ Basal question

Hi. Having the same Bolus amount at each meal isn't a good idea which is why being taught carb-counting is important. It's dead simple but not for me to explain but the job of your nurse. You need to insist it's explained and not wait for a training course. That's NHS nonsense.

    Levemir

Hi. In some ways Toujeo lasts longer and can be a better alternative if your overall control is good but for some, like me, it would not be better as I rely on being able to tweak my Basal Levemir daily as I have very bad control despite low-carbing. We are all different.

    Weight loss

Hi. Have you reduced your overall carb intake? That is different from carb counting as such. Some say that when on insulin you can eat 'normally', For some of us like me that doesn't apply. I have to keep very tight control of my carbs otherwise my BS sky-rockets. It sounds like your BS control...

    Counting carbs

Which is why it makes sense to completely ignore Calories and just take account of the Carbs plus Proteins and Fats

    Overwhelmed and defeated newbie T__T

Hi. First I don't agree with the advice given by your diabetes team to have >100gm carbs per day. Yes, carbs can increase weight but will also potentially increase BS swings. To increase weight it's better to focus on more proteins and fats where you can. I think it might be worth switching back...

    Bolus/ Basal question

Hi. Its sounds like your DN is not being very helpful or being over-careful. It's perfectly normal to use the Bolus for all main meals not just one. The NHS often starts you on a fixed dose which I think is not very helpful. Fortunately my great DN started me on carb-counting from the first day...

Blood glucose of +20 for over a month.

Hi. It's all carbs that matter to us and not just sugar. It sounds like you may actually be T1 (LADA). If you are not overweight then LADA becomes more likely. Do ask for the two tests i.e. GAD and C-Peptide. BTW standard Metformin often causes bowel problems. The Slow Release (SR or MR) version...

    UK Health Insurance for Diabetics

Hi. Yes I have the same problem with my BUPA insurance. My diabetes was a pre-existing condition when I started my policy and excluded from cover. This could exclude cover on many conditions. Not much you can do about it I'm afraid.

Possible misdiagnosis of type 2 diabetes

Hi. Be aware that C-Peptide tests can be unreliable. I had a plasma one done privately and it showed very low insulin. Later I had a urine one done in the NHS and it showed higher insulin. With the urine test, they use a ratio of peptide and creatine and this can be unreliable as creatine varies...

    Eating out nightmare

Hi. As you have found, never ask for diabetic foods etc. Very few restaurants understand that it's about low carbb so just choose low-carb foods where you can. If you ask for a diabetic meal when flying you will be given a low fat, high carb meal!

    Food

Hi. I'm an engineer/scientist by profession so have always taken an investigative approach looking for the science where I can for diet. My findings are that carbs are not good for us as diabetics unless kept reasonably down as they are converted to glucose. Your meter or GGM is a guide into...

    Type 1 and struggling

Hi. I think it's irresponsible to be placed on Basal/Bolus without guidance on carb-counting. It happens a lot in the NHS but fortunately my DN gave me the right guidance from Day 1. It's not the dieticians job to advise on carb-counting - it's up to the GP or nurse so you may need to insist you...

    Newly diagnosed

I agree. It's all about keeping the carbs down to a level where you aren't gaining weight and/or BS level and having enough fats and proteins. Yes, think Carbs and forget Calories as they are irrelevant.

    Newly diagnosed

Hi. The best general advice is to reduce the Carbs in the diet as these are converted to glucose in the stomach and raise blood sugar. Best to test 2 hours after a meal but avoid testing at the start of the day due to the overnight sugar dump from the liver. The other symptoms you mention are...
