Good article in Mens Health on reversing diabetes

I wonder what the average lifespan is for those who are dedicated Atkins followers ..... might be interesting to note.

Weighing yourself - too much detail?

I'd agree with this - 1-2 pounds a week is normal after the initial fast weight loss if you go low carb. I lost a stone in probably a month and have now lost 2½ in 4½ months. Another 2½ to go - sigh. Still, the best thing is being able to get back into my downsizing wardrobe. I feel a...

Type 1 Has Anybody Else had Issues with Omeprazol?

My father recently had a bleeding stomach ulcer and 80mg twice a day is what he was put on to let it heal. He is off them now, but I'm surprised you were on that high a dose. I'm on it myself but only at 20mg once a day - I'm on steroids permanently so if I don't have this I have stomach pain.

Weighing yourself - too much detail?

The problem is that your weight can vary by about 2 pounds (and sorry to have to say this) if you need to visit the bathroom! I've found that recently. I only weigh myself once a week because of this. Also, if you have been exercising a lot - remember muscle weighs more per square inch than...

I am spitting feathers today...FURTHER UPDATE

I wish I didn't know either! And the problem is if you have one autoimmune disorder you are far more likely to get another (since your whole system gets out of whack - real technical term that!). The docs don't tell you this unfortunately. Hey ho, such is life.

I am spitting feathers today...FURTHER UPDATE

I have steroid induced diabetes - been on and off the blasted things for over 20 years - hindsight is a wonderful thing! They should come with a health warning and a low carb diet sheet!

Type 2s: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning? (very low chat level)

3.8 this morning - a bit low for my liking. A bit shaky because of it.

    Lows

My bugbear seems to be potatoes too - never more than 4 small boiled ones at a time. Maybe just have the cheese and beans rather than all 3?

Very well done - its the ambition of all of us - to be able to get off the meds (40mg Gliglizade twice daily). Hoping to do this when I next have my review. Going to see the dietician this week - we shall see if they try and tell me to use the NICE guidelines - at which I will say, I'll stay...

Supplements - are these OK to take?

I tend to take supplements - Co-Q10 and D3 among them (as my neurologist said when I saw him and after I had had my bones checked (due to being on long term steroids), most people in northern climates will be vitamin D-deficient). Add to that magnesium (which I believe we need to be able to...

5.6 this morning (courtesy of the usual dinner at the parents last night).

Resist, resist, resist! (well go on just a small chocolate then - Celebrations are just the right size for a sweet!)

Offended by official, mandatory training material...

Of which being white, over forty, thyroid problems and autoimmune problems (all of which I fell into - and being overweight due to the last 2!). The sad part is that anyone with an underactive thyroid is more at risk of developing diabetes. Hindsight is a wonderful thing as they say!

    Sad, Confused needing advice

I definitely agree with that - my HbAC1 was 102 when diagnosed 4 months ago - at the start of December it was down to 50 - due to combination of one medication and a huge change of diet. Take heart - it doesn't mean life is over - just a change in diet (and a change in wardrobe - downsizing)...

Type 2s: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning? (very low chat level)

3.9 this morning - which was a bit of a surprise since I finished off the last 4 Celebrations with my admittedly low carb dinner of scrambled eggs and salmon (with a side chase of some greek yoghurt).

    Fulfil bars

Walnuts are good (they also I believe help with insulin resistance). Just don't eat too many of them.

    Blood test results

I I can attest to that - low carbing my HbA1C has gone from 102 to 50 in 4 months. I'm hoping to be able to come off the Gliclizade myself when I have my next review (and hopefully a further improved HbA1C).

Told to stop metformin for ten days as having bowel problems. Concerned BG will increase?

Fenugreek, bitter melon, gymnema sylvestre are all herbs that have been used for a long time rather than the meds that are offered to us by GPs. I use gymnema sylvestre myself - I think it is largely because of this that I have lost my sweet tooth - I read somewhere that it alters how the brain...

A conversation between a doctor and me

At the end of the day your liver can turn any food source into energy - doesn't matter whether its carbs, fat or protein. Just depends on whether you want diabetes to rule your life or you to rule it! And I have to agree the docs often don't like an informed patient (the old doctor is god...
