    Cholesterol Levels

I'm just awaiting my latest results. However, I came off statins 4 yrs ago due to negative effects - muscle aches and a severe drop off in athletic (aerobic ie heart related) performance. This affected my ability to control my diabetes by diet and exercise alone, so I refuse to go back on...

    Low carb diets restrictive? Myth!

Mike I'm not sure that the low carb forum is the best place to ask this as low carbing is popular among non-insulin T2s. Perhaps you should ask on the T1.

Are you hitting the 3 main diabetes targets?

Well I'm awaiting my latest results but I do have one I'm proud of... after 10 weeks of low-carbing my BP has dropped to 104/70 :D

GP uses low carb diet with 13 patients -amazed!

What we need Hornplayer is evidenced results. What we don't need is theories without evidence. Without evidence low-carbing is only a theory and should have no more credence than chanting over crystals or chucking money in a wishing well. Some people will grasp at any theory in desperation to...

GP uses low carb diet with 13 patients -amazed!

Absolutely not Dillinger! We were right to question the authenticity of the post. It is against forum policy to post as a GP and in doing so it seemed that SouthportGP was trying to give extra credence to his argument. You will recall that I have asked twice now for the published results of...

How 'Good' is good control of diabetes?

To some extent I do. But I only exceed my 60-or-so-g a day if I'm doing something for an extended period. For example, I did a 27mile mega-hilly walk on Saturday so I had an extra 15g of porridge (8g carbs) for breakfast and then had 2 rounds of sandwiches (ie 4 slices of granary bread - I...

GP uses low carb diet with 13 patients -amazed!

SouthportGP Do you have a link to the published report of this study? As it would make great evidence to present to others (even within the NHS) who are reluctant to believe that it works. Most of the time we only have anecdotes (although lots of them) which don't 'cut the mustard' as eveidence. Ta

How 'Good' is good control of diabetes?

Gezzathorpe. My Hba1c strongly correlates to fluctuations in my weight over the last 6 years (the graph plots show identical tracks). The last test 6.5% was post x-mas and my diet had contained too many 'treats' in the previous 6-8weeks and my exercise had been reduced due to a fall and a...

How 'Good' is good control of diabetes?

I've been diabetic since either 2000 or 2004 depending on which doctor you listen to ("yes he is","no he isn't", what a pantomime!). Since my first Hba1c in 2007 my reading has been lowest 5.9% (which prompted another "no he isn't" from the doc) through the low 6.somethings (where I got a...

    Exercises for losing weight?

Re: Excercises for losing weight? One other important point about the benefits of exercise. It improves your general health, particularly blood circulation, which is so important for diabetics faced with serious negative consequences of living long term with the disease.

    Exercises for losing weight?

Re: Excercises for losing weight? Exercises for losing weight are not necessarily the best for controlling blood sugars. My understanding is that weight training is acknowledged to be the best exercise for improving the body's insulin response, precisely because it builds muscle which is the...

GP uses low carb diet with 13 patients -amazed!

Exactly. Hence my polite request for published results. I frankly don't believe that SouthportGP is a GP at all. I would expect a much more intelligent and reserved post from such a member of the medical profession.

    NHS Couch to 5K

I'd recommend cycling rather than running. It's much easier on the joints and as its less stressful on the body you can keep it up for longer, hence more benefit. Cyclists are renowned for having good cardiovascular fitness and longer active lives than other sporting groups. I run too, so I'm...

Need to lose 80kg, starting tomorrow!

For a curry (of which I am a big fan) I now limit myself to Sag Paneer "spinach and cheese". It means I can still join people for the meal but I don't blow the carb budget - and I love spinach. :D

    Greek Yogurt

A word of caution... 'light' and 'low-fat' yoghurts have loads more carbs (sugar) than the full fat versions - not good! I have greek full fat yoghurt which is 5% carbs. :D
