    Pregnancy

Yeah as Sleepster said, I had to be testing 8 times a day or more (I was already testing around 9–11 times a day). The Libre sensor costs your GP surgery about the same as 8 daily tests to prescribe.

    Pregnancy

Hi Samantha, I’m not sure what the guidance is for pregnant women, but the Freestyle Libre is becoming much more widely available. I’m male and have a Libre funded completely by the NHS. If you speak to your diabetes team then they may well be able to get you one in any case.

    Uncontrolled diabetes

Hi Sophzzz, First of all well done for making the decision to address things. It’s tough but so worth it in the long run. I look at hypos like this: they happen because I’ve injected too much insulin, not because I’ve had too little food. There’s an amazing video on managing diabetes with a low...

    Type 2 Food prison.

No problem at all, there’s a lot to learn! The official guidance is that you can eat normally and match your insulin requirements with injections as a type 1. After decades of ambulances and feeling awful I looked for a better way and found it in low carbohydrate. It works for type 2 as well .

    Type 2 Food prison.

Hi Alan, I've been following a low carbohydrate diet for my Type 1 diabetes since 2014 and find that food satisfies me a lot more nowadays. My personal opinion is that it is by far the best way to manage blood sugars. That does mean cutting out a lot of different foods, but there's still...

Not sure what to do - need advice please

It’s important to get those levels down safely as soon as possible. I’d strongly advise calling the NHS non-emergency number (111) for advice as you may have high ketone levels with high blood sugars. But really well done for testing. I know it’s scary but you are completely taking the right steps.

Not sure what to do - need advice please

Hi Kristeen, firstly, you are *NOT* a lost cause. You've taken the first step by reaching out. That's huge! I've been battling with my own (Type 1) diabetes for almost 30 years now, and I've had some really bad times during that. I'm much better controlled now though. What changed? I did what...

Type 1 Diabetic - Obese and addicted to food

Sadly, insulin comes with a little-discussed sting in the tail: it has a big impact on your hunger levels. The more insulin in your system, the hungrier you’ll be. That’s why it’s so hard to break the cycle: you’re starving, so you eat. Because of that, you need more insulin. Which makes you...

What is the best diet a diabetic should be on?

Hi Kay, and welcome to the forum. I've been following a low carbohydrate diet since 2014, and it's made things so much better with my control. As mentioned above, Dr Richard Bernstein is the authority on this. He's a Type 1 diabetic who started eating a low carbohydrate diet in his 30s, and it...

    Hello!

Thanks for the support on the whole. However, you make a huge assumption that seeing a nutritionist is just bad, full stop. In actual fact, the nutritionist I saw was extremely supportive of a low carbohydrate diet. Before I booked their services I stated that this was something that I was set...

What was your fasting blood glucose? (full on chat)

4.1 on waking. Had a glucose tablet along with breakfast, which pushed me up to around 6.8 for the rest of the morning. I should have trusted in my glucose to enlist the Dawn Phenomenon; I probably would have been in the fives without the dextrose. Back to 5.1 an hour after lunch though so not...

What was your fasting blood glucose? (full on chat)

5.4 this morning on waking. Crept to 7.2 after breakfast but back down to 5.3 a couple of hours later.

Type 1: What are your HbA1c test results?

My last one (January) was 5.8, which is the highest it's been for me in quite some time. I'm aiming for non-diabetic levels really (I'm Type 1 and follow a low carbohydrate diet), providing I can achieve that without frequent hypos.

    Testing alot

What do you use to test your blood sugars? My DSN signed me up with a Freestyle Libre a few months ago, which has been fantastic for me. I've gone from rationing my test strips (testing 10-12 times a day) to being able to test whenever I want. Generally, I test between 35 and 50 times a day now...

    Hello!

Hi All, I've used the forum before, but I'm starting a new profile with a particular goal in mind. I want to keep my Type 1 Diabetes under great control, and I'm going to start a blog here soon to keep me accountable. It'll probably be little more than regular posts showing my blood sugar...
