Statins more than double the risk of type 2 diabetes, US scientists reveal

I've just had my cholesterol results back with a note from my doctor that my cholesterol level is high and I should be on statins. The result is : total cholestrol 5.2, ratio 3.5. Now I thought a ratio of 3.5 is healthy. Is my doctor talking the same nonesence as my DN or am I missing something?

Statins more than double the risk of type 2 diabetes, US scientists reveal

Interesting. Also, does it make a difference if your BG has fallen to non-diabetic levels. My nurse implied that even if it has, people who had high BG levels are still at risk of strokes and heart attacks once their levels have fallen. Has there been any research into this?

Statins more than double the risk of type 2 diabetes, US scientists reveal

The medical world is in two minds about statins and I suppose at the end of the day we all have to decide for ourselves. If you are lazy or weak willed you have to rely on medication, no matter how suspect. If you are strong willed and determined like us, then you can control your condition...

Statins more than double the risk of type 2 diabetes, US scientists reveal

All this makes it hard to decide what to do about statins doesn't it? When I had my first check-up, six months after being diagnosed, the nurse tried to pressure me to go onto statins even though my HBA1c had fallen from 53 to 40. She told me that once your are diagnosed as diabetic you must...

    Hb1c

Low carb is definitely the way forward and walk as much as you can too as exercise will usually lower your BG. You will need to up your fat consumption to provide energy. Avoid processed fats. Test your BG regularly to establish which foods to each and which to avoid. You should see a big...

Type 2 TYPE OF FAT I CAN EAT

It is difficult to prove that fat is good or bad because proof requires long and comicated trials involving thousands of participants. For many years the medical world demonised all fats. Then trials started to differentiate between different types of fats. At the moment the jury is out, but...

    Exercise does it for me

The bit about the hypo was a bit tongue in cheek! It does amaze me how effective exercise is in my case. I gather some people get a BG Spike when they exercise.

    Exercise does it for me

We are on holiday, so it's sometimes impossible to find HFLC food. I had fish and chips for lunch today. I know, all that batter and starchy chips. Two hours later my BG was 8.8. I average 6.4 after meals, so I went for a 10 minute walk up a steep hill. When I got back my BG was 4.4, so I...

    Unintentional weight loss

I'm inclined to agree with the other replies. It probably isn't anything to worry about but I would go back to your GP just in case. If he won't take you seriously, I would ask for a second opinion. GP's don't like it, but it is your right. Regarding testing, the NHS advises that T2 patients...

    Neuropathy AFTER gaining control?

That is a really interesting article. I definitely didn't have neuropathy symptoms before I took steps to control my BG, but I got pins and needles and a pain like an electric shocks from time to time when I was in bed. Both symptoms went after about six months of BG control.

    Neuropathy AFTER gaining control?

I had tingling and burning in my feet for about six months after I got my BG under control. I think it may well have been my nerves healing/adjusting to lower BG levels. I don't get it now.

    Type 2 Reversing type 2

The Western way of eating which has caused a diabetes epidemic is a relatively modern phenomenon. If we eat too much sugar then we damage our insulin production system and we may become diabetic. Stop eating sugar and you may be lucky and reduce blood glucose to normal levels, but the damage...

Has anyone quit dairy and noticed improvements?

I too have found my lifelong asthma has vastly improved since I went HFLC even though I'm now eating a lot more cheese and cream. And my erratic heart beat and irritable bowel are vastly better too. I've no intention of reducing my dairy intake.

    Help

Hi Boudica 1958 and welcome to this community. You clearly want to deal with your D2 problem and that is more than half the battle. Surf these forums and you will get all the information you need. Most of us ignore NHS advice as they insist that you should get around 60% of your energy from...

    Fallen off the wagon

The fact that you have posted here shows that you want to succeed. Don't set your sights too high. If you binge on carbs now and again it won't kill you it probably won't even affect you HBA1C test unless you do it too often. You are trying to change the eating habit of a lifetime, so there...

    No guidance

The NHS is so far behind current thinking in the advice they give that it's almost criminal. Lots of good advice here about reducing carbs, but you do need to take on board a number of changes to your lifestyle: 1. Keep testing immediately before and one hour and two hours after the first...

    Feeling alone

My wife is an ex-nurse and I get zero help or support from her. I have settled into a pattern of low carb eating that works for me and my BG is now in the normal range. Like you, I often feel a bit isolated. It really annoys me when my wife and children tell me I'm overdoing it, that T2's...

    Blood Glucose Meter

I can recommend the Codefree. Strips cost around £8 for 50 and equally importantly they don't require a big blood sample. Even a tiny drop of blood is enough and that means you don't need a deep and painful prick to get the blood that's needed.

    Foot problems - any experience?

I'm not a medical expert Chris, I'm not a medical expert Chris, but the numbness and tingling are certainly symptoms of diabetic neuropathy. If you only get the shooting pains occasionally they may be down to something else. I would certainly go to your GP. They can confirm what it is and...
