    What equipment do you carry?

I don't have a pump so I need to carry pens, used and unused (and used) needles, test meter and strips, pricker and lancets. I have a case to conveniently carry all that: "Joe's small-in-one" which does the job pretty well. The only problem is that as my meter is quite big there is only room for...

    Equipment wallet

I currently have a "Joe's small-in-one" wallet for my meter, pen, pricker, strips, needles and lancets. I find it just a little bit too small for e.g. an overnight trip. While there is a slot for a second pen it's very hard to close with 2 pens in place and there's very little room for used...

    Are you disabled?

No, I don't mean are you in a wheelchair but do you regard your diabetes as a disability? I recall a news item a few months ago where a person with T1D gave up work because they regarded diabetes management as a full time job. A similar news article cropped up yesterday where a young woman with...

    Forgetting to take a shot.

I thought I understood my condition fairly well until a couple of recent incidents when I forgot to take my mealtime shots. The first time was at breakfast; I remembered a couple of hours later and took my usual 5 units. By noon I was hypo. The second occasion was with an evening meal when I...

    T1D and Metformin

When my doctors figured out I was T1 not T2, I expected to come off all the tablets as I started on Insulin. Instead, they kept me on Metformin. I have queried it and the Professor I saw said stay with it as it could help keep my weight down. So who else is on Metformin with T1? Is it routine...

    Cheaper replacement for Lantus

On my last visit to my DSN she told me my Lantus would be replaced with a cheaper version in the future. I didn't write it down at the time so don't remember the brand name. Anyone else had this happen? p.s. I'm in the UK on free prescriptions so the cost saving goes to the NHS, not me.

Frio wallets - do they work?

Having bought one for a long journey, I soaked it last night in preparation. I put a temperature probe inside and found it was only 1° below ambient. Is this what I can expect? On the face of it, it hardly seems worth having but does it help when temperatures are higher?

Bolus advice meters - target range

When I got an Accuchek Aviva Expert meter, my DSN set it up for me. She entered a target range of 6-10. I queried that as 4-7 seems to be the accepted advice but she said if it was set lower I'd have too many hypos. As a result my levels tend to average around 8. I've now tweaked it down to...

    Data downloads - Accuchek

One can supposedly download data from an Accuchek Aviva Expert (the one with bolus advice). I've spent a lot of time on their website but can't find out how to do it. Has anyone managed it and is the analysis worth having in comparison to the stats on the meter itself?

    So cross

I went for my annual retinal screening today. The nurse taking my details asked how long I had been on insulin and metformin. I had been on tablets for 3 years with ever-increasing HbA1c before they finally did the tests and established I was type 1, putting me on an insulin regime. Young...

    What's your target BS range?

I hear a number of different figures for the ideal range of blood sugar readings. 4-10 is commonly quoted, I have also heard things like 4-7 before meals, 5-9 after etc. I was surprised when my DSN set up my new Aviva Expert meter with a target range of 6-10 saying that setting it any lower...

    BS rising overnight

Last night my reading was 5.1 before going to bed. When I woke it was 7.2. This overnight rise is fairly typical of my pattern, occurring about half the time. I take Lantus in the morning after my fasting test and have my evening meal with bolus 2-3 hours before bed. What could be causing the...

    Coping with time zones

I take a daily basal dose (Lantus) every morning around 8am. I am going to Australia for a couple of months this winter and am wondering how to manage the time-shift (+9 hours). My DSN suggested keeping it at 0800 GMT, i.e. 5 pm Australian time. I'm not keen on that because (a) it's an...

    Long-haul Flying

I'm sure this topic has been discussed many times over the years but I'm new around here. I am going to be flying to Australia and staying there long enough to need to take a dozen insulin pens, plus all the other paraphernalia. I know about keeping the vital stuff in hand luggage and...

    Late onset T1

I was diagnosed at age 65 and put on Metformin, then Glicazide but my HbA1c kept on climbing. Finally at age 68 they did a test and determined I was T1. I'm gradually getting to grips with it and thankful I haven't had to cope with the condition most of my life. Anyone else hit by T1 in later...

    Not type 2 after all

After 3 years on Metformin and Glicazide my HbA1c is still way too high so they finally did another test and discovered I am type 1. As I'm 68 everyone took it for granted that I'd be type 2. I've had loads of information thrown at me by a variety of nurses trying to fit me into their already...
