Anyone have experience living in Malawi as a type 1 diabetic?

I may have the oppurtunity to work in Malawi on a voluntary capacity next year for 6 months. I am type 1 on medtronic pump and dexcom. I've travelled abroad with Type 1 before, but never to a third world country, and for a prolonged period of time. I suppose i was wondering if anyone has had any...

Opinions wanted from fellow type 1's

Hi @helensaramay, For me the most difficult thing has been the sheer ignorance of others when it comes to type 1 diabetes ( most of it is due to lack of knowledge to be fair). However I do find the snide comments/ judging remarks about food choices to be exhausting Other than that, the many...

    Starting Low Carb this week

Hi, sorry for the late reply Yes I've done low carb before with a small amount of weight loss and with really good Blood sugar control The things I find hardest are 1) boredom of the same foods 2) limited at work due to canteen food 3) as soon as I go away on trips with my friends ( weekends...

Opinions wanted from fellow type 1's

Seeking opinions from fellow type 1's. We all have a lot to deal with on a daily basis to manage our diabetes adequately. If you had to pick, what is the ONE thing that you find the MOST difficult about your diabetes management? Is it the finger pricks? The constant injections? The Maths...

    Completely over it

I'm definitely going to get the libre once I get back.home from my trip. My insurance doesn't cover it I dont think so.it will be self funded but I think it will be extremely beneficial longterm. The pump is a consideration but I'll need to discuss this with my diabetes team.further. I think I...

    Completely over it

Just had a great day on my three week holiday finished off with a noodle dinner and ice cream. Took the ( or so I thought) appropriate amount of insulin using my carbs and cals app and the food label of the ice cream Two hours later felt a bit off so checked my blood sugar. 1.9!!! Now three...

    Morning highs in the 30’s

So update this morning Went to bed at 6.6, with 0.3 ketones. At 2.30 I was 8.6. At 4.30 10.7 My only query was that my ketones are 1.9 at 4.30. Not huge but still a bit of a rise

    Morning highs in the 30’s

Hi @helensaramay. Good point. I’ve has similar issues with pizza before and needing to split dose- it’s so stressful! On Friday I had a late meal of raw oats, banana and soya milk. I took 10 units for this (1:10). I had an active evening of cycling done prior to this meal so sensitivity probably...

    Morning highs in the 30’s

I’ve just eaten right there so it’s hard to tell. But it might well be the lantus. I did have a few semi used pens in my insulin pack that I’ve been rotating between that are still in date but probably not working as well maybe. So I’ve ditched them all and will use a new pen this evening

    Morning highs in the 30’s

@kitedoc I use lantus in the evening time always. And my BSLs have now normalised completely with no ketones. Which makes me think that it’s either severe Dawn phenomenon or hypo With reactive hyperglycaemia. I will try a new site tonight though and a new pen to see if that makes a difference...

    Morning highs in the 30’s

Thanks for the detailed reply. I wondered about a possible low as well but the ketones is what threw me off. I’m not sure if this could happen with Dawn , although my dawn has never been high enough for me to be worried enough to check ketones before. I’m pretty resistant to insulin from...

    LCHF and high blood sugars

How long have you been doing lchf for and is this the first time you've had ketones in your blood? It's more likely related to the low carb and not eating much but it's important to monitor ketones all the same simply for your own peace of mind

    LCHF and high blood sugars

What dose of basal insulin are you on? Waking up with high bg despite going to bed with reasonable sugars is consistent with dawn phenomenon.... Have you had this before? The alternative is that you are coming down with something which may be causing the high sugars too If you're not feeling...

    Moving to New Zealand

Thanks for the advice. Are they strict at the airport in terms of checking the quantity of insulin you have? I have a doctors letter for carrying insulin on the plane. I have potentially a years supply between pens and cartridges
