    Keep it Friendly

I was very interested to read the e-mail "Keep it Friendly" presumably sent out by the administrators of this Forum. I only joined the Forum last month and haven't fully made my mind up about it yet but the one thing that has really turned me off is the Low Carb vs Carb debate, it is in my view...

how much insulin to take to correct a high.

The generally accepted rule is 1unit of quick acting insulin will lower your blood sugar by 3 mmoles/litre but as johnar says everyone is different. Taking 2 units and dropping from 22.5 to 6 seems a bit drastic but it depends on a few things like how soon after you ate did you test and take...

    Night time hypos

I used to get very bad hypo's during the night and they were the scariest thing I have ever experienced in my life. Often I wakened up and not know where I was had no concept of time reason or anything , sometimes my wife was wakened by the fact that I had been restless and she sorted me out...

    Help HbA1c

Dennis, What I am saying is HbA1c is a retrospective measure and isn't meant to make you focus on specific detail. Your daily bloods are a real time measurement and that's what you should use to identify when and where things are out of control. If you are working in that way,by testing at...

    Help HbA1c

Sue, HbA1c won't tell you that it isn't designed to do that. If you think you are getting spikes then you should test around the point you think they are occurring and then once you find it sort it out. But don't rely on the HbA1c test for that. It is good practice to occasionally do tests...

    Help HbA1c

Hi Dennis, This is my second attempt at a reply. I spent a few minutes putting one together and it didn't show up for some reason. In short I think we both have a similar view on this and I feel that why get hung up on trying to make sense out of two results that are quite different in what they...

    Help HbA1c

Hi Broads, Can't help with the site you are looking for but I really don't think there is any value in trying to convert HbA1c to an average Blood Sugar result. As a scientist I expect your husband will understand this. HbA1c measures the amount,as a percentage, of Glucose attached to the red...

    Corrective doses

In a situation like this clearly you do need a correction but you need to remember that your lunch time insulin dose will still be active for another hour. The generally accepted rule is that 1 unit of insulin will reduce your BS by 3 mMoles/litre so if you target for a BS of 6 mMoles/litre...

What do you like best about levemir, lantus etc??

I have been on Levemir for about 18 months now and it is extremely good better than Lantus, especially if you are on a split dose. It gives a much more even profile than all long acting insulins I have used and I seem to get less hypos especially during the night. Cheers

    ASCEND - study

I am quite new to this forum but I am surprised that there doesn't seem to be any coverage of ASCEND. I realise however that it may have been a topic in the past. For anyone who isn't familiar with it, ASCEND is a study that the Universty of Oxford are doing into the effect of Aspirin and...

    Discovery Sheets

Not wanting to be critical but the things you are suggesting seem very similar to DAFNE so why not ask to go on the course if you haven't done it. DAFNE is fantastic I swear by it. If you stick to its principles which are very simple, and fill in the diary, which is I suppose a spredsheet that...

    Insulin Intake System

Mary, If you are really meaning that your system will give a dose of insulin just based on a particular bood sugar reading then I don't think this would work. Perhaps you haven't told us some other parameters you are also considering. Usually when you have an injection there are a number of...

High morning blood sugar levels (DAFNE)

Joolie, The problem you describe is almost exactly what plagued me prior to going on DAFNE. Even now my biggest difficulty is keeping my blood levels right through the night. But I now have 85% success in having a Blood Sugar between 5 - 8.5 when I awake (often my morning blood sugar is almost...

    Eye Screening. ?

In County Durham there is an excellent system in place where every year you get a letter inviting you to attend for eye screening and this is done at the local hospital and has been in place for at least 5 years now. A couple of weeks after your appointment you get a follow up letter giving you...

    Meter readings in the cold?

I often get this problem when I play golf at this time of year, infact it happened today. The simple solution is similar to what others have said. I put my meter into my trouser pocket 10 mins before I am going to test and don't have any problem in being able to get a reading.

    please advise re: cramp

My understanding is that cramp occurs when the levels of salts (Sodium Potassium etc) in your body drop. Try eating bananas they are high in Potassium. But remember they have a CP value of 2 per 100g so you will have to take account of this in your CHO intake.

    Continuous Blood Glucose Monitoring

Little Sue, I have been interested to read what you have posted on this subject. I am getting rather frustrated with the manufacturers of this type of equipment as I wish they would talk to their potential users. I offered, via a web site enquiry, to take part in a trial but then heard nothing...

    Help needed!! HBa1c 14.6

I am a big fan of DAFNE and from what you have written I am sure it is the answer to your problems. I really think all people who are diagnosed Type 1 should go on the DAFNE course within 6 months of being diagnosed. It explains everything you need to know about Diabetes and managing it. The...

    Average on Meter Vs HbA1C

I don't think you should get too worried about trying to make a direct comparison between your daily meter readings because they are measuring two different things:- Your meter gives the actual value of the amount of glucose in your blood at the time you measure it expressed in millimoles per...

    MY IGNORANCE

I test 5-6 times a day, before each meal, before I take my Levimir evening injection and then before bed. Basically this follows the principles taught on the DAFNE course and it works! Before I did the DAFNE course I tested at loads of different times of the day (I am a scientist and I like...
