    low carb and cholesterol

Thanks. :) I know the overal cholesterole is ok, but I'm worried that the HDL is so low - currently it's 0.8 mmol/l (30.9 mg/dl), and keeps getting worse, while the LDL creeps up. If it continues like that, next year I will have zero HDL and LDL well over 5 mmol/l. And I have no idea why.

    low carb and cholesterol

Hi guys, I need advice from people who actually KNOW what low carb means (my doctor doesn't). I was diagnosed with LADA 4 years ago. First thing you should know, I'm not in the UK, I'm in Slovakia and counting net carbs is a pain in the... here, so I always count total carbs. I'm currently on...

I have just returned from the regular check up. It is now confirmed that I don't have T2 but LADA diabetes. I started doing crossfit. (The first few sessions almost killed me.) I didn't lose any more weight (10 kg from the beginning in October 2014), but now I have some muscles instead of just...

    Diabetic pizza effect?

Hi, It's in my signature - Humulin 3, 20 units in the morning, 10 units in the evening. I was diagnosed with 16 before meals, and 24 after. To get to 9 or 10, especially if that's after meal, in 2 weeks is awesome. :) Few more weeks, and you'll have the normal values. :D

Moving on….Starting on insulin....positive signs of improvement ...glimmers of hope...

Hi Molly tbh, I was determined not to post on this forum again, but after reading this thread I decided to make this one exception. It seems your husband is in denial, because he's afraid of changes, he's afraid he'll have to give up what he likes - and he's refusing testing because he...

    5 foods to avoid???

Heh. I expected this, you know. The moment I say that LCHF is not the only alternative, someone immediately reacts 'but you're on insulin'. Yeah. I am. The levels of my C-peptid are too low, so my doctor thinks it's best not to go to diet only. Does that make me 'not typical T2'? And what...

    5 foods to avoid???

Most people on this forum will recommend low-carb diet, and it does seem to help to many people. But it's not the only way, you know. My doctor also told me to eat carbs, though not 'half the plate'. She told me exactly how much carbs I should eat for each main meal (40 grams) and for snack...

    Diabetic pizza effect?

Yes I did and no thanks. Drastically reducing one type of food while taking a lot of another simply doesn't seem like such a good idea to me. I prefer a more balanced diet. Besides, if the Chinese Restaurant Effect is true, then even LC is not really LC and can cause high blood sugar. ;) I'm...

    Diabetic pizza effect?

Yeah, I much prefer fibre over fat. I just googled it the Chinese Restaurant Effect. Now I wish I didn't. I want to be happily ignorant and believe that my celery and lettuce won't do anything to my BG. Because otherwise I don't know what to eat. :D

    Diabetic pizza effect?

Oh, I see. Thanks for the explanation, that helps a lot. :) I was asking because I have a recipe for mini pizzas (approx. as big as 2 slices), they'll be around 50 grams of carbs. It's 10 grams more than I should eat for lunch, but as a rare treat, I'm willing to risk it. I don't put cheese on...

    Diabetic pizza effect?

I see this mentioned quite often around here, but I still have no idea what it's supposed to mean. I tried to google it, and guess what - all the links refer back to this forum. xD So, what is it? :D

    out of control

I'd really recommend frequent testing - before and after every meal. And keep a detailed log of what you ate and how much. At least now, when your BG is not normal. You'll have much better idea what and how affects it - and it will be also easier for your doctor to figure out the best treatment...

Your TOP ten songs ... yep, it's hard

Hmm this was difficult. In no particular order: I Just Wanna Be Okay - Ingrid Michaelson I'll Follow You Down - Shinesdown Heartburn - The Architects Shine - Vienna Teng Until My Last Breath - Tarja Turunen I'm Your Man - Leonard Cohen I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2 Wild...

Travel insurance- do I need to tell?

LOL I work for the insurance company, so let me clarify this. It depends on what risks your policy covers. Luggage, liability, assistance services, accident? Not necessary to admit it. Medical costs? That's where it gets tricky. You see, if you had a claim related to high blood pressure...

Have you been told not to test your blood sugars?

That's not a proble of just UK or an indivdual doctor not being educated enough. My doctor warned me it's not true, and gives me all the support she can, but... the maximum the law here allows to give T2 for free - and even that only if they are on insulin - is 1 pack (50 pcs) of test strips in...

Chick peas, lentils, barley etc, good carbs?

Here's an article about carbs and nutrients in chickpeas: http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/carbcounts/a/Carbs-In-Chickpeas.htm They have a lot of carbs, but also a lot of resistant starch. So I'd say they're good - you're not going to eat all 6 servings at once, after all. :)

    how many carbs

There isn't one right answer to that. It depends on how fit you are (ratio of muscles vs body fat), what your lifestyle is, what kind of job you have... A fit person who has a difficult manual work and uses a lot of energy will be able to eat more carbs. Or a pro sportsman. Someone who isn't...

Recipe pages for diabetes website - what's important to you?

Carbs, fat and calories - yes! (GL of the whole meal would be awesome, too). Avoid vague things like 'average serving', 'average size', etc, especially when the number of servings can be easily determined. E.g. if it's a recipe for a low-carb bread, please don't give numbers for 'one slice' or...

    Glycemic Index or Glycemic Load?

^ This. :) I fould that GI/GL system in combination with set amount of carbs allowed in each meal, gives me the best control over my BG without restricting my food too much. It takes some time to get used to it, and at first it requires some math and weighing of ingredients (at least at home)...

    Fasting blood sugar verses HbA1c

Um. I'm sorry, could you please show me WHERE I said 'don't test', or where I claimed my doctor said that? I said I test seven times per day and my doctor said not to worry about FBG since all my other readings AND HbA1C are good. And, well, you chose to be left to fend for yourself - you...
