    Cold remedies

I had the same problem. Was looking for a decongestant and the pharmacist sold me sudafed, saying it would be ok. Got home and read the label and it said unsuitable for diabetics. Fortunately I have an 'in family' pharmacist that I could call to clarify. Her advice was that diabetics should...

What place has this on the forum?

The principal problem in DKA is the production of β-hydroxybutyrate which, although known as a "ketone body" is not, in fact, a ketone but a carboxylic acid. Ketones are structured R-(C=0)-R whereas carboxylic acids are R-(C=O)-OH. Regards Cliff (Chartered Chemist)

    SUgar substitutes for ice cream

I use Splenda with no problems at all in low carb ice cream recipes discovered through Google. However, I found that I did not need the quantity of Splenda specified; using half the recipe amount was just fine. Remember vanilla extract rather than essence if you're going down the vanilla route...

Why the big difference between the HBA1c and daily readings?

Re: Why the big difference between the HBA1c and daily readi The difference arises because the HbA1c and your meter are measuring completely different things. The numbers are only close because of the mathematical way their units are expressed. The HbA1c measures the amount of glycosylated...

Will I always be a diabetic?

Kate - When I was diagnosed 11 months ago, I was on the overweight/obese borderline but now have a BMI of 23.2. I had very high cholesterol and triglycerides but now they're normal range (no meds). I had sky high BP and now it's lower (not normal range yet but I'm working on it). On most...

Will I always be a diabetic?

Are obesity and T2 linked in some way? Probably yes, but links do not prove causation. Perhaps insulin resistance leads to obesity rather than the other way round. Imagine an insulin resistant person eating a high carb diet and then think of the pancreas working overtime to overcome the...

    Benecol

Can I suggest that you read the Benecol label carefully - there are different types and some are much higher in carb than others. The ones marked Dairy Free are about 1g carb whereas, to the best of my recollection, other types have 8 or 9g.

Atkins and an already rasied cholestorol rating

Then I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. All I can say is that I was told by my health care team that I must take a statin and would never get my lipids into normal range by diet alone - I didn't take the statin and I did achieve normal range. PS It's Dr Kendrick, not Mr.

Atkins and an already rasied cholestorol rating

When diagnosed T2 I had a cholesterol of 7 and trigs of 6. After following a relatively low carb/low Gi diet, my cholesterol dropped to 4.1 and my trigs dropped to 1.2, both normal range figures. I don't go out of my way to eat saturated fats nor do I go out of my way to avoid them. I'm...

Is it worth going on meds?

Howski - I'd be very interested to hear about your fasting levels. Your pre and post prandials appear pretty good and are not far away from my own, and I have a pretty decent HbA1c. You might be pleasantly suprised at your next test.

Is it worth going on meds?

Howski - it has to be your call and no-one else's. What are your fasting readings? Do you have much weight to lose? Diet and exercise are really powerful tools in your armoury. You do have the option of metformin plus diet and exercise and, if you gain great control, reducing or eliminating...

Is it worth going on meds?

The snacking option didn't work for me although I understand it works for others (except for red wine the night before - that does work for me but I shouldn't encourage anyone to increase their alcohol intake). When diagnosed I had a fasting level of 9mmol/L. I got that down to the low 7s...

Is it worth going on meds?

Howski - those are very similar to the readings I had for the first few months after diagnosis. At that time I was in the 5 to 8 range. Some dietary tweaks and I now run in the 4 to 6 range which is far more comfortable. In fact, these days, only my fasting levels hit the 6s (dawn...

    PCT weasels

Hana - I'm T2 diet only and also in West Berks PCT area but my experience was different. Rather tentatively I asked my GP to prescribe strips to which he said "of course - one pack now, 5 on repeat, very sensible, how else are you to work out what foods work for you and identify trends that you...

    Books on Diabetes

The Gretcher Becker book is excellent - I have a copy. I don't have the Jenny Ruhl book but have heard great things about it.

Diagnosis Question - long winded beware!

Hi Lucozade. As I understand it, the diagnostic threshold is two fasting tests of 7 or above or one fasting test of 7 or above plus symptoms such as going to the loo all the time, dry mouth, recurrent yeast infections, that sort of thing. Your symptoms are similar to those that led me to go to...

    Eyes improved

Thank you for your kind words Nigel. The interesting this is that nursey said I would never get my lipids into normal range by diet alone and that I was mad not to take statins. She estimated a maximum reduction of 30% and absolutely no more than that. By my calculations, cholesterol is down...

    Eyes improved

I'm with Hana on this one. I was diagnosed T2 with cholesterol of 7.0mmol/l and trigs of 6.0mmol/l. Now, after 3 or 4 months of a reduced carb diet and paying no attention whatsoever to fats, saturated or otherwise, my cholesterol is 4.1mmol/l and my trigs are 1.2mmol/l. I have tightened up a...

Should I take statins and metformin?

When I was diagnosed in October last year, my cholesterol was 7.0mmol/l and my triglycerides were 6.0mmol/l. I was told that I should take statins as I would never be able to achieve any more than a 30% reduction by diet alone. I decided to give diet and exercise a chance. Latest blood work...

Highest blood sugar is morning fasting reading?!

I have a similar problem (I'm T2 diet controlled). Pre-meals I'm typically in the 5s. My 2 hour post-meal readings are typically in the 6s. I'm relatively happy with that. However, my fasting level is typically 7.0 to 7.2 and I'd dearly love to get it down. Tried a number of different...
