    Metformin newbie - progress log

I have been on metformin 4 a day since November after 4 weeks of building the dose up. I didn't have any particular problems with wind although I found appetite curbed slightly. I was on holiday recently and had lots of "jaggy" pains in abdomen which were relieved when I broke wind both up and...

Is it time to see GP

Thanks for your input folks. The reason I was blaming metformin is that I have been on glic for two years with no ill effects it started with metformin. This shaky feeling usually happens just before lunchtime and goes when I eat. I think I will make appointment with the doctor.

    Diabetes and Chemotherapy

While I was having Chemo I was extremely thirsty and put it down to the treatment I was having. I was drinking cranberry juice because I was told this was good to prevent thrush which is a common side effect of chemo but I still felt that I was drinking too much and asked the nurse if she could...

    HBA1c

Many thanks for your information, unfortunately I don't know what HBA1c reading was last time unfortunately but I am guessing it was higher than the 7.2 it was in the previous test. The metformin seems to be working for me anyway, I will have a good chat with doctor.

    HBA1c

My doctor added metformin to my medications about 4 weeks ago because my HBA1c had risen from my last test. I do seem to be tolerating them I take 2 a day. Since I started them I have been testing with strips bought by myself and I now have average of 7 for 30 days and 6.2 in the last week, if...

    Holidays

I realise stress doesn't help but I don't have a stressful life. I was slightly stressed while I was on holiday because I was worried about volcanic ash perhaps delaying our return because my daughter is expecting her first baby on 1st June. May be more stressed than I realise about the birth...

    Holidays

I was on holiday for 2 weeks in the sunshine, I walked for miles every day, drank lots of water and ate and drank some things I wouldn't have here but not excessively. Result, lowest fasting readings I have ever had, and never above 7.5 any other time. Have been home for a week and am being...

    Medication alone

I have been testing with mostly readings <7.6 and as low as 5 before meals the 15 seemed to be a one off. I test at my own expense. I think sometimes I get paranoid and wonder if this is the reason that doctors tell us not to test, but I really do like to know that I am not going way up. I...

    Medication alone

Can you be a little less strict with diet when you are on medication? I can't seem to work out which foods suit me at all. When I expect my reading to be up it is good and vice versa. The other day I took a reading 2 hrs after lunch and it was 15 a large drink of water and a 1 mile brisk walk...

    Tesco chemists

Very good of you to consider the burden on the NHS unlike some Ebayers who blatantly sell them for a profit.

    Walking

I kind of think it is, but then I think surely it's better than sitting on the sofa.

    Walking

Thank you, I was laid up for 7 weeks with a broken leg and couldn't do the walk and definitely didn't feel as well as I do with the walking but wasnt't sure that it was strenuous enough.

    Walking

I walk almost every day for at least an hour not at power walking pace but fairly steady, is this considered exercise for a diabetic?

    Stopping medication

Thanks for your reply. I don't need to lose weight and last year when I followed a strict diet I lost more than half a stone very quickly and the sugar levels fell. However, I kind of fell off the wagon and went back to my old ways of eating and the sugar levels shot up again, hence the...

    Stopping medication

Once you are prescribed medication is it likely that you will ever be able to stop and get back to controlling by diet alone or is it for life?

    Is medication working?

I was undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer and was given a bs test because I complained of a raging thirst. The result was 17.2 which they said might be high because of the steroids I had been given these were stopped. An appointment was made with my GP who did the hbA1c test and told me...
