    high fibre breakfast

My favorite breakfast is plain, nonfat Greek-style yoghurt (usually Total 0%), mixed with a spoonful of oat bran... a spoonful of brewer's yeast... and about two heaping spoonfuls of flaxseed. Lots of protein and fibre, not too much sugar / carbs. When I want quick 'n' easy, I have either...

    Question for all you bakers

I didn't look specifically through the Goodness Direct site to see if they have it, but prompted by your comment, Etty, I gave it a shot. They have some products made with potato fibre / pofibre as an ingredient, but they don't carry pofibre "plain," to use for cooking, at least not that I can...

    Question for all you bakers

I usually shop at Tesco's;it's good for the basics, but not for any unusual or nonmainstream foods. For items like low-GI baking ingredients and non-wheat or gluten-free flours I order from Goodness Direct. I think they have the potato starch/flour you're looking for. I buy cracked flaxseed from...

Wow, that's great! Wish our surgery had a nurse specializing in diabetes...

    Teatment since NHS Reforms Began

Re: Treatment since NHS Reforms Began For What It's Worth: I'm all for self-management. What are the tools we need for good self-management? 1) Information. There should be diabetes "classes" available, without charge, so the newly-diagnosed can get basic information. It's also helpful if...

    First Christmas with type 2

Onions themselves can be fairly high in fructose (natural fruit / vegetable sugar). I'd be surprised if the pickling solution didn't have some kind of sugar in as well. And I'm not sure what, if any, relationship exists between sodium and blood sugar, but it seems to be that a lot of diabetics...

    Sanitizing for Fingerstick while Travelling

Thanx, one and all, for your responses. I ended up with sterilized 'wound wipes' from Boots. They came in individual packets, and were a handy size to slip a couple into the meter pouch. Most of the time I had access to soap, water, whatever, but the few times I didn't, they worked a treat.

Newbie in need of help :(.

Hi there - I'm a bit late to the game, as I didn't see this posting until today. For what it's worth, I eat six mini-meals per day. Each meal is between 200 and 300 calories, and I end up with around 1500-1600 / day. I also try to balance carbs / fats / protein within each (no easy task, that...

    Sanitizing for Fingerstick while Travelling

Hi there! Does anyone know of a convenient, portable cleanser that will: 1) sterilize the area to be tested for blood glucose; 2) not leave any kind of residue (especially that won't interfere with an accurate reading); 3) not require the use of water; 4) come in a container smaller than the...

does this only make sense to me?

The whole idea of eating when you take your tablets means to take something with them so you aren't having the medication on an empty stomach. Medicines on an empty stomach are absorbed more quickly, so they get into your system before they have a chance to move into the lower gut where they...

Type 2's: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning?

Re: Type 2's : What was your fasting blood glucose in a morn Usually in the 4's, tho occasionally it pushes up into the 5's - this AM, 5.2. Medication-free, lifestyle-controlled. So far, so good...

    Free gym membership

Speaking as the unemployed wife of an OAP - we can't afford gyms or fitness equipment. Even the 'cut-rate' discounts would add up to too much for us, especially when you factor in transportation costs. I wish the NHS would offer some kind of 'basic plan.' Diabetics, hypertensives, people who...

    Nurse & Low Carb Diet

I am so confused about WHY doctors would recomment or prescribe MORE medication! Regardless of the state of health of the patient (I'm not suggesting the healthcare community doesn't or shouldn't care, just that if only prescriptions are considered) - the NHS keeps publicizing the need to cut...

    Diabetes and dignity

I'm not sure about being assertive regarding healthcare: I finally complained to my surgery about a receptionist who took every opportunity to make things difficult for me. (Whether she does this to others or not, I couldn't say - but she consistently behaves rudely and uncooperatively to me.)...

In praise of Health Care Professionals.

Just like any other service industry - not all practitioners are 'good.' Some healthcare professionals are dedicated, committed, well-informed, and genuinely care about their patients. Others are working toward a paycheck, making life convenient for themselves, not keeping current with what's...

    Just daignosed really need help

Hi there! It's been a month since your post and I wondered how you're doing. Have you been able to start getting a record of your BG levels, or finding any patterns? Are you still on the Metformin 500x1 / day? Have you had any additional visits with your GP or possibly with a diabetes-specialist...
