Hot Chocolate

I've worked out the following recipes for both a milky hot chocolate and an instant...

The cocoa I used for both was a Tesco Everyday Value low-fat cocoa I picked up on a whim to try with baking. It didn't taste bad, but I think green & black's organic cocoa would have given a better flavour.

Milky Hot Chocolate
3 TBS Cocoa (plain, unsweetened)
3 TBS Splenda or other sweetener
Warm milk

Combine cocoa and Splenda together in a small bowl, then measure out a few teaspoons and add to a mug of warm milk...use as much or as little as you need to get it to the consistency you like. I used 3-4 teaspoons of the mixture for a large Cath Kidston mug (and will leave some leftover for another day!)

Instant Hot Chocolate
2 TBS Cocoa (plain, unsweetened)
2 TBS Splenda or other sweetener
2 TBS Skim Milk Powder (NOT non-dairy coffee creamer/whitener)
Hot water

Combine all three ingredients in a small bowl, then measure out a few teaspoons to add to a mug of hot water. Use as much or as little as you'd like for taste. Again, I used about 3-4 teaspoons for a large Cath Kidston mug (and had a bit leftover).

You also could easily make it a cappucino by adding in some instant coffee, or using instant coffee, cocoa, splenda, and coffee creamer (instead of powdered milk).

It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing!

Another quickie is to put cream/milk in a pan and add a square of high percentage chocolate. Stir until melted and then sweeten to taste.

No idea about calories as I never count them and as I'm ULC (since January) I don't eat anything sweet unless I'm desperate. So, a mug of Lactofree/cream must be about 4g of carb. If you use 100% cocoa, like Willies, at a guess the small amount you'd need would be about 1g but this is all a bit of guesswork.

Any idea about the nutritional data - calories, carbs, etc?
:)

I think that would depend on the brand of cocoa and what type of milk product you used....

the Tesco Everyday Value Fat reduced cocoa powder I used has:

Per 100g / Per teaspoon (6g)
kcal 310 / 19
protein 23.5g / 1.4g
carbs 14.0g / 0.8g
...of which sugars 1.0 g / trace
fat 11g / 0.7g
fibre 30.5g / 1.8g
sodium trace / trace

I used regular semi skimmed milk for my milky one, and powdered skim for the instant, other people have used lactose-free and one of my friends used soy when they made theirs, so I can't give accurate information on the milk.

Hope that helps!

I use Bournville cocoa - 2 heaped teaspoons (I like it strong) Xylitol (healthy sweetener with no after taste) about a teaspoon but I don't like sweet and unsweetened soya milk -Holland and Barratts is literally soya beans and water with no yukky thickeners, maltodextrin etc . I make is frothy with a frother jug. Delicious.

I have to say this a real lifeline, I was missing my evening cuppa. My morning glucose is down to mid 4's from mid 5's, made with water, a real bonus...........maybe.

And I too am using Bournville
