    Type 1 Friends

T1 30 years almost. I think it's part of the British character - mustn't grumble etc. I have to refrain from rolling my eyes sometimes when a newly-diagnosed T2 comes up to me and bemoans their life. I had a T1 ex-GF once, there was always a sort of unspoken understanding. Like I say...

New to low carbs..tried & failed! Help!

OP, looks like you're on the right track, so stick with it. You'll feel a lot better as well, guaranteed. Carrots, as someone said are carby, as are tomatoes. My recommendation is to 'shock' your body once a week by having a carb blow-out. So on a Friday, you can treat yourself to fish...

my lunch...what made my bg spike?

It would be the cherry tomatoes. I've experienced this recently. Tomatoes are a fruit, I keep reminding myself. I find that only blueberries and melon keep me within range.

Constant high blood sugar over last few days - any advice?

Haha! I set myself up for that one..!

Constant high blood sugar over last few days - any advice?

Thanks to you all for your replies. I was 6.5 this morning which cheered me up considerably. Had a couple of hard boiled eggs and now showing as 4.6 before lunch. :) So whatever it was, it seems to have passed. I think it might've been a wee virus that did it. **** viruses/virii! Mo my...

Constant high blood sugar over last few days - any advice?

Yes, it's late :-) I'm up because I had to lie down earlier, and fell asleep. Since Thursday night, all my BGs have been at 10+. Some as high as 18. I don't feel ill (apart from the high BG signs) and I've taken corrective doses, changed my insulin vials, done light cardio exercise and they...

Does having type 1 diabetes affect levels of fertility?

Thanks for that post, sw11bloke, very informative. Am currently in family planning discussions with my wife - she is nervous about the child developing T1 so this is of great use.

    Cartridges

Hey Sarah My experience is similar to Robin. ISTR it happened because I took my pen into extreme warm/cold environments and back again e.g. coming back from holiday abroad. If it's more than half-way through, write it off and plug in a new one. It's not like we're paying for it :)

    FULLY CARB FREE LUNCH IDEAS????

Ophelia I've been having a carb-free breakfast at my desk for a while now. Boil/bake a ham at home, carve it up and bring in a few pieces in a tupperware box alongside some boiled eggs. Myfitnesspal puts that at about 2/3g of carbs but if uni means walking about between classes etc then...

    Family planning counselling?

Thanks for your reply. I don't have a strong family history, only a T1 maternal aunt. I think it's more down to pre-conceived ideas of DB, as you say it's more manageable now but my missus is scared of having a wee one with it. More discussing to do, I think. Thanks again, appreciate it.

    Family planning counselling?

Hope this is the right place to ask. My wife (non DB) and I (T1 for 28 years) have discussed starting a family but she - at the moment - would prefer not to have a child as she is convinced that the risk of he/she developing diabetes is too high :( I've mentioned the stats (8% chance I...

    Low carb diets restrictive? Myth!

Nice one, Claire! :) Talking of jeans I had to add extra notches to my leather belts so it's all going good. Just about to go on holiday though - that'll be a challenge with all the eating out...

    Sugar Free Gum

Ooh, Dentyne takes me back. I'm currently trying these out: They contain Xylitol which is 100% natural. The flavour doesn't seem to last very long, haven't seen an effect on blood sugar so far but it's early days.

    Low carb diets restrictive? Myth!

Same here, I have definitely thought a lot more about what I'm cooking/eating since fully committing to low-carb. Have lost 9kg in just over a month, too. Really getting into stir-fries, amazing how many different kinds of veg you can throw into it. Salads don't get boring if you flavour it...

    Morrison's Chilli Nuts

Wow. That's good. I buy Clancy's version from Aldi, 9.6 per 100g. Shame there's no Morrisons near me.

Anybody else using the Abbott FreeStyle InsuLinx?

Hmm, will try ordering another. Here's hoping! BTW, as True Bassist said, hold down the wee button and the backlight will come on. :)

    Sugar Free Gum

IIRC Berstein rules out sugar free chewing gum because of the sorbitol. Are there any alternatives? I make a quite a lot of stir-fry with garlic, chilli etc - you can see where I'm going with this...

Anybody else using the Abbott FreeStyle InsuLinx?

A bit more from me - this is the best meter I've ever had. Yes, there's no backlight and the carb calculator starts at 15  but it's been invaluable. Wish I could have two - one for home, one for work.

    Low Carb Success

Great thread. Gone back on this diet with a vengeance. Dabbled in it before after reading Berstein's book but I've found that weighing portions has been a big help. I use MyPlate at Livestrong.com (yes, I know) and it calculates the exact amount of carbs for the grams of food you're about to...

Fizzy drinks and people who don't listen

It's a pain. My biggest bugbear at the moment is when you ask for "and soda", they serve it with lemonade! I always say "and soda water" to stress the point. On the other side of the coin, when I've asked for a soya cappuccino at a coffee shop, it's never been a problem.
