    Struggling. REALLY struggling.

If noone has suggested it yet, I'd insist on getting an Antibody test from a blood sample.....if you are that reactive with that level of pills, then you could well have Type 1 LADA.....but the Antibody test will confirm that.

    When first diagnosed...

Hi All, Just thought I'd pose a few questions to help those freshly diagnosed with Diabetes. I'll try to keep it short. When first diagnosed (whichever type, but especially type 2) in my view, you should not go straight to a low carb diet and exercise like crazy. Sound like madness? The...

    what to do

It sounds similar to my initial findings. I knew even early on (diagnosed with Type 2 in 2010/11) that I was extemely reactive to any carbs, even those supposed to release slowly into the system. So the improtant thing imo is to keep a diary, it's a pain, but you need to really show the health...

    Type 1 at 21

It's not all bad. It forces you to eat well, exercise more, and for me I'm studying the condition which means back to Chemistry....I know the high level, but since this is a likely life long gig, knowledge is power. What subject is your degree?

    Started Metformin one week ago....

Well you'll need to hold off on them as these are the fast short chain sugar molocules....and will send you BS much higher much sooner. I am as I type studying the condition from scratch, I want to know everything about the condition, what causes...all the terminology. There is such a variety...

Help! Potential LADA, struggling to get a clear diagnosis…

The C-Peptid test is not going to give a conclusive answer, it's only an indicator. The Antibody test is the one you need to get the correct diagnosis. I did not realise until reading your OP that this test is expensive? Perhaps answers why they took so so long to eventualy do mine...results of...

    Started Metformin one week ago....

I agree, but to me in the beginning, it's good to know just how reactive you are to carbs. For example I have a friend that has Type 2 and can eat Weetabix and it does not raise the BS too high....but for me, just one brick sents mine up a lot. But then that's before I knew I had Type 1 (late...

    Started Metformin one week ago....

My honest advice if you've just started on Metformin is this. Yes get a test meter and strips and test your BS 2 hours after food and medication. Keep a diary to show your Doctor/Diabetic Nurse. They will not give you strips on prescription yet. If over time the Metformin/Change in life style...

    Another newbie. Type 1.

Your not alone. I was close to 19 stone before I was diagnosed. On the meds for Type 2, I lost a lot....down to 16 stone.....but the BS remained high, and I stopped measuring, and I kept eating lots....as in I'd eat a bacon sarnie, crisps after 9pm....and for a time ignored my condition. I have...

    New diagnosed type 2

Good to hear the meds work for someone. If you are having Hypos, then you need to get ontop of that sooner than later. Metformin can take some adjusting. I was on max dose of Metformin and Glic...and did nothing for me...and found out 2 days ago I actually have Type 1 (later onset)

    Now Type 1!

Thanks for that. Yes, I have been started on 2ml of Humalog for Breakfast and Lunch and 4ml at dinner. Then 8ml of the slow acting one at night. Dibetic nurse was very very confident I'd not be up in the night for my ususal 3/4 trips to the toilet, but she was wrong, like clockwork I've been up...

    Another newbie. Type 1.

On the postive front, being Type 1 (I myself was diagnosed Type 2 in 2011, and found out yesterday that in fact I am Type 1) you won't have to go through all the different pills they give you to help with Type 2. You can start with Insulin and get the dose right for you. Also...Red wine I am...

    Now Type 1!

Hi Folks, I was diagnosed with Type 2 in 2011, and put on the first drug (Metformin), did nothing for my BS, so over time they upped the doseage until I was on the Max daily allowance. Then on to Gliclazide and recently Sitagliptin, but again none of these did anything to bring the BS down. I...

    Doctors fail again...

Well that is interesting. I was told to come off the pills as of today. They sometimes keep people who's pancreas still produces some insulin like mine on Metformin, but my Diabetic nurse said no in my case. They have started me on very low doseages of insulin. The long 24 hour one once at...

    Doctors fail again...

Thanks for that, I am not worried about injections, I just want my BS under control, and was a bit upset it's taken the Doctors this long to find out. I'd been complaining for some years that the pills are just not working.

    Doctors fail again...

Hi, I was diagnosed with Type 2 in 2010....and before that for years I had been complaining of frequent visits to the toilet and they failed to diagnose my diabetes then. I've just recently had the antibodies test and the local hospital rang me this morning to tell me I have Type 1 LADA, and...

    so down

I was only going on the advice by my diabetic nurse....wait....your going to **** her advice  Perhaps my faulty logic, but if I eat a carb, I know it's going to spike my blood sugar higher than a non diabetic, so why should I be surprised if I measure then.... If measured first thing...

    Test strips again

I have tried for some time to get strips and the meter on prescription. Initially refused as I was on Metformin and advised to follow a balanced diet and exercise. Argued until until I was blue in the face, about needing to know what food and amount was affecting my blood sugar was critical to...

    so down

Very true, but we need to use out brightest talents to do Science and research into health issues...not into makeing better more effective weapons and defence systems.

    so down

There is a lot of conflicting advice even amoung the professionals who are giving advice on the condition daily in their jobs. To my mind, if your pancreas has got to the stage where it can't produce and release enough insulin (resulting in Type 2 Diabetes), then the damage is done. Losing...
