    Not a competition

Think the highest mine has been is 112mmol/l so it probably is quite high. That said, I've seen people get to non-diabetic levels from very high starting points, and you can do that too.

    Hello!

I know the feeling. Having gone through a difficult few years (nursing then losing both parents), I find I get very little pleasure from life. Work, money, relationships and of course the dreaded diabetes are all getting me down. I rely on wine as a crutch. I find this place helpful though -...

Got my results back from the doctor today and she'd climbed down a bit given that my cholesterol and lipid panel were perfect (I have FH). So diabetes is the only issue I have ATM. A1C is 93, but I'm feeling motivated and have been eating low-carb and walking 15k steps a day this week.

    A1C dropped

Going in the right direction. Well done.

    Newbie type 2

Being able to reduce medication is a sign you're doing really well. Well done!

    Newbie type 2

Natural to be worried as a newly-diagnosed diabetic, but hopefully the above responses prove reassurance. The risk with Type 2 is not hypos, but nerve damage caused by high blood sugars over the years and decades. If you’re around 4-5mmol/l you’re doing good. I haven’t been below 10mmpl/l this...

Certainly my idea of a balanced diet would contain nowhere near 50% of carbs thankfully! Just enough to keep it sustainable, as I found it impossible to stick to Keto in the medium to long term.

Incredible effort! This is really inspirational. Thanks

Thanks - I did have C-Peptide test in 2023 as the doctor suspected LADA(?) but it came back fine. I agree about balance. I had a spell of eating up to 100g of carbs with my evening meal, but no carbs at all for the rest of day. Combined with exercise it seemed to have a positive effect. I'm...

    Diagnosis just before holiday

To echo the above, maybe avoid the obvious high-carb items like ice creams and donuts (at least in huge quantities) but otherwise eat normally, enjoy yourself, and be ready for a deeper dive into diabetic diets when you get home.

Of course, I'm on 500mg Metformin twice a day, and Gliclazide 80mg twice a day. I also reduced my weight from 17st to 13.5st within six months of diagnosis and I've kept it off.

Have you been on Metformin for long? It may be a short-term side-effect while your body adjusts. But if it's a more permanent reaction, it's probably worthwhile looking at other meds.

Hi - it was 103 upon diagnosis in August 2018. My doctor had flagged me as pre-diabetic earlier in 2018 during a blood test for something else, so it obviously developed rapidly that year. Got it down to 53 within the next six months using Keto. For the past 3 years I've been living more or...

    Mental health and test results

Just checking in to offer solidarity and support. I have massive health anxiety too. My doctor told me yesterday I was at high risk of a heart attack or stroke, and I've spent the whole time since expecting to collapse any minute. I was also offered a fibro liver scan (impromptu) while at the...

Went for my annual review yesterday, and was told that I was at very high risk of a stroke or heart attack due to my uncontrolled A1C (which has been VERY high for at least five years). She said "Every year you say you're going to start taking care of yourself and you don't." I used to post on...

    Complications

I think you'd be very unlucky to be experiencing diabetic neuropathy with those sorts of numbers.

GP not sending medical exemption certificate

I was told to fill out a form and I never got round to it. Then last time I went to get my medicine from the chemist, the prescription had 'excempt' written on it and therefore I didn't pay. I wonder if we're now in the same boat!

    Binge eating sugar

It's a vicious cycle. You comfort eat carbs, then you feel awful and tired because your blood sugar is high, so you eat even more carbs, go into denial and go off the rails. I've been through this cycle about 3 times and you have my sympathy.

Very high BG level shot up in a year!

I've been in a similar boat my friend. I found that low-carb eating is so effective, that it's tempting to let it lapse and think "I'll go back on it when I'm feeling less stressed, or busy, or after this holiday etc" then before you know it the old A1C is back in triple figures. Well done for...

    HbA1c 106mmol/mol

Very easily unfortunately. If I eat anything close to a 'normal' diet my A1C sails over 100, meds or not.
