Trouble losing weight since starting insulin

Don't blame insulin for weight gain - it is what we put into our mouths that causes weight gain.

    Type 2 Are apples ok?

Yes, apples are quite high in carbs. However, a saving grace for apples is that they also have a lot of fibre. Many days I eat one apple, but I also try to make sure that it fits within my daily carb allowance. That may mean giving up something else to keep a limit on carb intake. You need to...

Problems with error on freestyle libre 2

Nope, I have seen the message about 'novo pen' on my reader. The only message that I have gotten is "scan again in 10 minutes". This would happen just after I would get out the sauna - it clearly does not like the heat.

What have you eaten today? (Low carb forum)

Yesterday (Sunday) my food consumption was an absolute disaster on all counts (calories, fats, carbs, proteins, sodium and potassium). After my second meal, I noticed that BG has surged to over 9.I injected some insulin resulting in a hypo in the early evening. Then I ate an apple that solved the...

What have you eaten today? (Low carb forum)

I have had Baklava many times before. However, I do not keep it at my home because of it being diabetic unfriendly. As expected, after a few hours my BG did fall to a light hypo (without any insulin) that necessitated chewing a glucose tablet. Oh, the joys of diabetes!

Would you be concerned about a potassium level of 5.2?

In Canada (Ontario) the range is up to 5.2. My latest potassium is 4.6 but I have been at 5.2. Because I have CKD, I need to be aware of my potassium intake, and should avoid high potassium food like avocados, apricots, etc. However,5.2 is not a level where red lights start flashing yet. I try...

    Hyperparathyroid and hypercalcaemia

The positive is that if the damage cannot be reversed, at least the problem will not deteriorate any further.

    50 pounds

Don't. Either your metabolism will adjust to starvation mode, or you will cheat with food when ravenously hungry. The crucial aspect to remember with weight loss is that it is a marathon, not a sprint. You did not gain the weight overnight, so don't expect to lose it overnight either. Have...

    Hyperparathyroid and hypercalcaemia

I did not have any symptoms at all - it all just showed in my blood work: high PTH and high calcium scores. NO bone pain at all. The same with my CKD. If the blood work did not say so, I would be completely unaware of my kidneys being compromised.

    Hyperparathyroid and hypercalcaemia

I had parathyroid surgery last year on January 4th. One of the four glands was removed. It was day surgery, and pretty uneventful. The scar on my neck is completely gone, and I have to look very careful to find it. I was fully OK within a week. My PTH score is still higher than normal, but...

Type 2 Hot Showers and affect on Blood Sugar

I don't think a hot shower or using the sauna has any real impact on one's BG level. My assessment of the apparent rise in BG is more a case of the electronics embodied in the sensor not liking the heat, and therefore stop working properly in that environment.

What have you eaten today? (Low carb forum)

I often buy Basa at an Asian grocery store (Basa originates from Vietnam), although the last time I bought some at Costco. The flesh of Basa is less firm than say cod or salmon, but it cooks very quickly. I am not sure in the UK, but here in Canada basa is very economical as compared to other...

    Donating Blood

I am also in Canada, and there is no restriction on donating blood because of diabetes. However, I was banned from donating blood because I am a mad cow - I lived for a few years in the eighties in the UK. I understand that this restriction has been lifted recently. However, I still cannot...

    Creamy polenta porridge

Hi everybody - I have not been on the forum for ages. The reason being that when the format of the site changed, one needed to log in again and I could not remember my password. Anyway, here I am. The 300g of dry polenta with 300 ml skim milk and 300 ml single cream is correct. In South...

    Hacks to reduce energy costs

Good heavens that's expensive: my hydro (electricity) cost is about $600 pa, and my gas cost is about $800 pa, that is about $1400 pa (or about GBP 900 pa at the current exchange rate). And Toronto has a warmer climate in the summer and a colder climate in the winter than the UK.
