Type 1 and oral Cortisone (Prednisone)

Hey everyone:) I've recently been put on a prescription of Prednisone for respiratory problems caused by a viral infection, but the prednisone seems to be making my blood sugars spike pretty badly. I have read that this is normal for prednisone, but is there any way to avoid this? Or should this...

    Basaglar acting too quickly?

Hi Thanks for the reply. I have contacted my DSN, so hopefully they will let me change insulin or find a way to help with the problem. :)

    cgm/gm in south africa

Hi. CGMs can be bought from CDE Pharmacy or Pharmacy Direct, but they are quite expensive. https://cdeonline.co.za/ https://pharmacydirect.co.za/diabetic-care#/manFilters=11 Most medical aids will give a limited number of free test strips if you are type 1, but most of them do not cover a CGM...

    Basaglar acting too quickly?

Thank you so much. I will definitely try that. I think my dose is right at the moment, because I haven't been getting any hypos, but I'll definitely look into that. I was told to inject everything into my stomach a different spot for each injection, but it makes more sense injecting the basal...

    Basaglar acting too quickly?

I was also diagnosed in November. Thanks for the reply:). So I also usually make sure its above 7 before injecting, but it tends to drop very quickly after the injection:banghead:. I have actually noticed that it is a lot quicker when I hit a capillary, but most of the time it doesn't bleed and...

    Basaglar acting too quickly?

Greetings I am finding that my long acting dose of Basaglar drops my blood sugar really quickly after I take the dose. Is this normal for Basaglar (e.g., it can drop from 8 to 4 within half an hour)? If so, is there anything that can be done to stop this, because it gets pretty annoying...

    First HbA1c since T1 Diagnosis

My endocrinologist have been monitoring the lowering of levels, so all is good there. I wear a Libre half the time and do plenty of finger pricks the rest of the time and there's definitely no hypos happening :) Thanks for the advice:)

    First HbA1c since T1 Diagnosis

My HbA1c at diagnosis with type 1 was 11.3% (100 mmol/mol) and after 6 months of being on insulin, it has dropped to 5.2% (33 mmol/mol):)

    Libre and flying

I recently flew (in South Africa) with a Libre sensor on and it did not set off any alarms. Not sure if the airports are stricter in your part of the world though.

    Greetings from South Africa (T1d)

Thanks @rosemaree. I also have the problem with it peeling, so I now wear Kinesiology tape (which can be bought at Clicks) over the sensor, which alos protects it slightly if it gets bumped. I put cotton wool or something of the sort over the sensor to make sure that it holds the sensor on but...

    Greetings from South Africa (T1d)

That makes sense. I have started always carrying my glucometer in case of sudden blood sugar drops. I have been finding that amazingly useful in regulating my basal dose, as I was finding that I went too low at night and then my blood glucose level rose before I woke up, so the glucometer...

    Greetings from South Africa (T1d)

That's great, thanks. The medical funds seem to not like paying for these sensors sadly. I don't have a problem with minor errors or lag in the readings, but some of the sensors would read 6.0 when I was actually 4.0 for example, which is quite far off. I guess that I would have to get used to...

    Greetings from South Africa (T1d)

Thanks :) The majority of them are giving incorrect readings (2+ mmol/l off) when checked with a glucometer. Not sure why I'm having trouble with them, as they seem to be working for most people. Another one fell off and another two ended early. This is pretty frustrating, as these sensors are...

    Greetings from South Africa (T1d)

Howdy I am a 22 year old type 1 that was unexpectedly diagnosed about 6 months ago. My blood glucose levels are under control although it is a bit of a struggle going through the honeymoon period. I am having plenty of problems with Freestyle Libre sensors though (6 out of a total of 7 that I've...
