Me too! I had a much bigger than usual dinner, turkey, 2 roast potatoes, 1 yorkshire pudding, carrots, peas, celeriac, gravy, chestnut stuffing, bread sauce, cranberry sauce, the works. Then amaretto and cherry xmas pudding and cream. Forgot to test after 2 hours but 3 hours later my bg was 5.6 :? Just colour me confused! Or should I eat Xmas dinner every day?

Wow Jaykay you were lucky to get away with such a good reading. I can't see any explanation for it... but I expect someone will have one! Although I had Xmas pud I was careful and had brandy butter made with sweetner - not bad tasting but the texture wasn't the same. And with the lunch I didn't have potatoes. This morning fasting I was 6.8 which was much nearer the limit than I would like. I'm usually in the 5s in the morning. I was pleased though that my weight was the same as yesterday morning :) Back to normal diet today though. No leftovers to eat up!

I know! It's so strange. My son ( a science afficianado ) muttered things about fat intake but actually, I don't think the fat levels were that high. I didn't have a huge plate, just a little of everything but absolutely food that I would normally run away from screaming! Aah well. It's not going to change my low carbing ways in any way so I'll just smile and say, thanks Universe, I really enjoyed that! :D

People who lie , animal cruelty , boredom and pineapple !
I was quite naughty , but not really bad  I had one roastie, loads of home made stuffing and a piece of tarte citron with clotted cream for pudding, then a small piece of pork pie for supper, oh joy, it was lovely :D I decided not to test, didnt want the guilt trip , but I have to say that the carbs laid heavy in my tummy all night , think it was the stuffing overload x

People who are touchy.......feign indignation at the slightest thing. Hypocrites, bullies and cowards.
I had 3 slices of Turkey, 3 Roast spuds, roasted veg (carrot, parsnip, swede, onion) sage and onion stuffing, gravy and loads of cranberry sauce ! Tested at 3 and 4 hrs.......7.4 and 5.2.

Not worried about that as it is just a one off....well actually not because I shall be having the same today :D I won't be getting paranoid about any of it........oh yes, I also had a proper mince pie, brandy butter, brandy cream later that same night. :)

My levels are all well in the 5's and 6's most times so normal service will be resumed on Monday !

Way to go........

Today I must say that I'm pleased to get back on my diet. It gives me a sense of security. I like testing to see I've got good levels. I'm not back there yet after yesterday but it will come... :) Until New Year's Eve and Day

edit later: I have just been inspired to renew my acquaintance with our poor neglected treadmill which hasn't seen me since I had flu.

btw contrary to what the thread title says this is in fact my second Christmas as a diabetic. My levels were much better the first time... I think I was stricter.

Gosh I was walking round the shops on Monday and they had all the Christmas fair out you know the cakes and chocolate and it dawned on me that I wont be able to eat the chocolates etc - we normally buy a tin of Roses or Quality Street which do last us until around March or May if we have 2 tins the following year but it was such a blow to me to realise this is my first Christmas as a diabetic and how hard it is going to be. I love my mince pies and I realised I wont be able to have any.

How have other diabetics got on with Christmas especially as its the time to "eat Drink and be merry" does this cause problems :?:

Love to hear from you all
Sue :)

Hi Sue

You took the words from my mouth - I was saying just the same things to my work colleagues the other day, my first year too and this 'next' hurdle only sunk in this week when I saw all the Xmas food in Sainsbury's.

Never had a sweet tooth, not had added sugar or salt for most of my life, but do like strong dark chocolate, red wine, port and (yes I know it is sweet) mince pies.

I had logged on to find an alternative mince pie recipe and your topic came up in the search!

I am heartened by the replies! Decided - I shall lapse a couple of days, Just keep testing, it is true "life is too short".

As my doctor won't supply testing gear I have no idea what Christmas dinner did to my bg levels, so I just had one teeny roast potato but two helping of pud as we were doing a taste test, Aldi v Sainsburys best. Aldi won hands down. Also had mince pie and brandy sauce. Well they put the diabetic in charge of the dessert course so what did they expect? :p
I'll be back on the wagon soon though. Very glad to see I am not the only one who thinks life is too short to be miserable over a pie.

I'm so glad to hear it's ok to let go over Christmas. I wasn't looking forward to missing the roasties and parsnips. I don't have a sweet tooth so not bothered about sweets but there is a melton mowbray pork pie with my name on it
I am fortunate in that I am not keen on frost potatoes and I rarely drink alcohol. As I live in the above town I may allow myself a small slice of the pork pie, but as I prefer pigs in blankets, they will get priority. Only diagnosed 3 days ago so scouting round for friendly versions of Christmas Pudding etc. I will be seeing a diabetes nurse later in the week and picking her brains about ordinary every day meals - I am staring to get tired of just soup or egg on toast for my meals!

Hi @KoKoCat , welcome to the forum.

You've found an ancient thread here (the last post before yours was over 13 years old) so you may not get many replies here.

You could start a thread of your own with your questions, which will be much more visible.
I also think you'll like this thread where we share what we've eaten, and what works for us and what doesn't: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/what-have-you-eaten-today-low-carb-forum.75781/page-3190

There is absolutely no need to eat just soup or eggs on toast for your diabetes!

Most things can be made lower in carbs with a bit of ingenuity.
Look on low carbing websites, sugarfreelondoner seems a good one, and try out a few of the recipes in the nest few months perhaps?
H have found that a few days of higher carb eating make no difference if I've been low carbing for some time and have emptied out the reserves, but as I will be over 8 years from diagnosis this Christmas and have been in remission for a long time, I don't find sugary chocolates all that interesting.
I make some little things with chocolate and nuts - a high cocoa chocolate, melted, and a little blob in a sweet mould, then desiccated coconut - unsweetened, squash it down to make a base then drop in a sultana (soaked in something alcoholic as it is Christmas) or a 1/4 of a glace cherry with the syrup washed off then slivered almonds or walnut pieces and more chocolate to hold it all together, but not making a solid chunk, leave some airspace. It is almost as much fun making them as eating them.
