So diagnosed type 2 in August this year with an HbA1c of 112.. I've been following LCHF diet from 2weeks post diagnosis..Gliclazide stopped after few weeks and full dose metformin commenced results today...HbA1c 47 ...I'm so pleased as my aim is to eventually stop medication but was told today I'm on the drugs for life ! Have others been told this even though their BG reduces ?

Congratulations! :) That is quite an achievement.
I went from 1500mg metformin to 500mg as soon as my numbers were in prediabetic range. When they came below 42, I stopped the medication completely.

I have also stopped the metformin .. once my bs come back into the normal range mine was stopped

That's great progress @Beach Hut
Well done and hopefully you will continue to make good progress. I'm sure a number of people on this site have come off meds. I think if I remember correctly @13lizanne was one.

It all depends on the level of control you are able to maintain...so continue to work with your healthcare team on this.

Yes that's right @Hiitsme, it took about three months if I recall correctly.

Thank you all for your encouragement I will continue doing what I'm doing and keep everything crossed for a drug free future! x

Very well done, I am sure you will reach your goal of being off medication in minimal time, hopefully you are in the high percentage who do this. "..let food be thy medicine".

@Beach Hut - Great results!

Don't worry too soon about the Metformin. Just see what happens at your next review,. Then you can have another chat with your Doc, from a stronger position of having sustained, or even bettered, your improvement.

This video, by our very own, @Southport GP , tells a story, loud and clear in just 2 minutes and 55 seconds.

I was diagnosed around the same time - with agreement with my GP I was able to stop taking Metformin end of September - (based on results from my meter ) although - that was never my initial aim - I was more focussed on reducing my Hba1c and saw no meds as bonus - you are going in the right direction and you will have further opportunity to discuss with your GP - I found in my case I let the data do the talking. Keep up the good work !
