Ok getting my readings down need s bit of advice.
If you test 2 hours after eating should the reading be what the food does to you ie spikes
or should it be taken that you should be back to pre food readings after 2 hours. My readings are nearly always up after 2 hours I can't see how I would get them back to pre meal readings in only 2 hours. Explanation please

Hi there

You are aiming to be heading back towards the pre meal read.

<8.5 2 hours after food is good, many aim for lower than 7.8

wat sort of reads are you getting?

Mary x

Some not good then. I have fasting readings of 6 and 7s and night time readings of 6 and 7s but inbetween if I have eaten afterwards they can go up to 10 or even 11. My reading last night was 5.6 and this morning at 6.30 6.9. by eleven o clock today I had one 2gram carb wafer biscuit with my cup of tea at 7.00 and then 1 piece of burgen bread toast 12 grams and better at nine oclock and a reading of 11 at eleven o clock. I have only been doing this low carbing 70-90 carbs for 10 weeks and although my morning and evening readings are coming down the spikes seem to be sometimes high for the things i eat. and I definately do not get down to pre meal readings in 2 hours. Am I expecting too much too quickly. I can understand to a certain extent the thing about testing and anxiety!

I don't know why they ask for 2 hour readings.
The top of the spike is at 75 minutes after you begin the meal[for most people]. That means that by 2 hours, if you've used medication, you are on the way back down.

I can't handle any bread , even burgen. So I have eliminated it totally from my diet. Perhaps you are the same?

I also find I can't handle any carbs in the morning but can later in the day, have you tried different carbs at different times of the day?

You seem to have it ok most of the time, I've only been diagnosed 2 weeks longer than you and am still finding foods I can or can't eat.

Te spike can vary from half an hour to well over 2 hours according to the GI of the food you've eaten. However, if you're up at double figures after 2 hours, or even over about 8, you need to either eliminate some of that food or you'll need a different medication routine if it happens all the time.

I seem to be able to eat Burgen bread with other things like scrambled egg on toast tried that at lunchtimes and seems not too bad which is why I thought toast for breakfast would be ok.. Maybe it is eating it alone that does it. Although anything I eat in the morning seems to be bad cereal, porridge, toast, fruit etc anything with carbs I react quite badly to in the morning. I do know in the evenings I get much lower spikes. I have tried half a packet of special k snack biscuits in the morning that is about 8 carbs that took me up from 8.2 to 10.0 after 2 hours that seems about the best I can do. Does anyone just have protein in the morning although I dont think I can face meat early mornings. maybe a cold boiled egg although wind can be a problem with boiled eggs and metformin  I really do not like breakfast but you all say its best to eat something or you get a surge (is that right). Sorry Grazer to get 8s two hours after breakfast in the morning I would have to eliminate all food and starvation is probably more dangerous than diabetes. no offence meant.

Hi sdgray22,

I'm not sure I can offer much more, other than say it sounds like we're both at the same place at the moment. All my morning food is sending me in to double figures, though I wake at about 6 mmol.

It's difficult to know what more to cut. I have started (just in the last couple of days) by drinking a small amount of cold milk when I wake up - this appears to get me past the 'must eat something' stage and then I have bacon and eggs or greek yog with a splash of red fruit.

Trouble is that Gk Yoghurt is blinkin expensive stuff - may have to start buying cheaper stuff and straining it myself.

Good luck

For breakie I have a combination of the following.

omlette (1 or 2 egg depending how hungry)
bacon
mushrooms
toms

If not really in the mood

I smear philli on 1 or 2 slices of cooked ham and roll it up, and either shove it in mouth or if feeling arty slice into 'wheel's' and put on a plate lol

that's about it - breakfast used to be my fav meal - not any more

I have been testing for 2 weeks now.

I have discovered that ANY amount or type of rice is out for me. :(

And that i can have a slice of homemade wholemeal bread if it is combined with eggs or cheese or some other protein, but toast without enough protein eg butter and marmite, makes me spike.

its all a bit 'trial and error' so I am keeping a food diary of amounts, times, calories, carbs and combinations of food. Its time consuming, but I hope that soon I will see clear patterns and will know what to avoid and when. And then it will get easier

Despite what my family say, I am NOT OCD :D

Well done! Ignore the OCD comments. Like you rice has all but gone so has pasta, bread and potatoes. After 14 weeks am I bovvered NO!

Carb craving is an addiction just like any other after a while you wont give a **** (mostly honest). You'll begin to find it highly amusing when people sit there and taunt you with their "don't you wish you could..." kind of thing. They just don't get it...

Came out sounding like Borofergie again.

If you've a local LIDL get their Greek yogurt. It's excellent and a good price

Will do Hanadr - there's not a Lidl near hear but there's one near Wickes and I feel some DIY coming on.. :-(

Hi Not sure if Type 2 works the same as type 1 but if so your body will have produced insulin and this takes time and it could be checking it 2 hours post meal may be too soon and giving the body time to work on the glucose may find your BM goes down as insulin will just about be at its peak at 2 hours and will be active for another 2 to 3 hours just a thought leave it a little longer before testing as Type I i only test pre meal but as i say not sure worth a try .

Hope you sort it

Sounds like I am lucky as I can get away with fruit and homemade muesli with yoghurt, cinnamon and soya milk in the morning. I have less carbs as the day goes on.
None of you mention exercise. If after breakfast you go for a FAST 15 mins walk that should bring down your numbers.

Also as some of you have discovered what you put on your Burgen bread makes all the difference. Cheese being protein and fat is good as is peanut butter and humous. The only way you learn what your particular body can tolerate is by testing.

Yes I agree with that if I wake up with high DP then I do precisely that after breakfast. It will bring your BG's down most times.

The problem you describe is a common one. We talk about rapid acting insulins forgetting that on average they work over 6 hours with most of the glucose lowering taking place in the 2nd and 3rd hours after injecting. The only possible way of controlling 2 hr BGLs well is either by eating less high GI food or dosing well before the meal. This carries with it other risks. This issue is covered well in the latest edition of "Think like a Pacreas" but I have only found through years of trial and error.

Just to note the OP is T2, not T1, and not injecting insulin.
According to the signature :D

I have one slice of burgen bread every evening just before bed. I cover it with spread (Benacol at the moment) and peanut butter. I have found doing this my fasting numbers have come down really well, and I don't spike with it. Like others have said it's all about eating and testing until you find what it right for you.
