Hi guys,

I've got my 2nd Hba1c test tomorrow and I'm feeling a bit worried about it. I'm pretty sure it'll be lowish, as because the gliclazide was doubled last month my figures have been around 5.5-6 on average. Dr gave me a prescription for some strips to only check before food, which is where those figures come from.
However I tested a few times after rugby training to see what it did, 5.5ish before and 10-12 afterwards.
In the last week too, I went down to 4 one evening, but also had quite a few readings 11-12 sometimes 5 hours after food. Feeling rough and the figures seem to be all over.
I'm not low carbing but watching what I eat. Avoiding obvious things, white bread, white rice chips etc. not over weight anyway and do exercise.

I suppose what I'm really worried about is that the medication that was working seems to already be going a bit wrong even though it was only doubled last month. I'm not sure my dr would welcome my comments about the blood testing I've done.

Im negative for GAD so prob not 1.5 and obviously producing insulin.

Should I ask for a c-peptide test too, should I tell the dr anything else or let the hba1c tell the story?

I'm probably just feeling sorry for myself and the bloodtest tomorrow is making me think about it all. Apologies for the long post.

Im type 1 but i think your readings are absolutely fine. After a meal your reading will be always higher but if you keep it low most of the time Im sure your Hba1c will be good. Probably better than you expect :) Mine was 6.4 last time and my readings are sometimes shockingly high. You should check after what food you are higher than usual. Mayby fatty meals make your sugar high? Not sure about training but i read somewhere here that some kind of exercising can increase sugar levels. Anyway let us know about the result :)

I increased my glic tablet recently and nitice my sugars seem high a few hours after eating. I think this normal as next meal its back to single figure

Hi. I would keep testing 2 hours after a meal to see what foods affect you most and do consider the low-carbing diet approach as much as you can. I think you need to see what the HBa1C result is and perhaps ask for another in 3 or 6 months? A c-peptide test can be useful. I just had one done privately and it confirmed I was producing very little insulin; my doc thinks I'm an insulin resistant T2 (Hmm - perhaps not). The GAD result can be inconclusive. I also had this done privately recently as well and it was negative yet my pancreas is knackered so as usual db is a range of conditions. Regardless of the cause of your db, the route is similar i.e. try the obvious tablets and then consider insulin if the HBa1C is over 7.5%. I'm on 360mg of Glic and also Sitagliptin which helped me for the first year when I went on it. Metformin may help just a small amount.

Thanks for the replies. Was feeling a little sorry for myself. Big guy feeling like a little boy.

Anyway, will wait for results and see what's best, though the nurse started talking about insulin therapy as a possibility to control things better.

Doing some training would have lifted my mood but the snow has cancelled that. I'll have a nice cup of tea instead :-)
