Diagnosed with type 2 only 3 months ago and put on Metformin to control blood sugar levels. I have been OK with this medication, experiencing the odd period of diarrhea. But now I have had diarrhea for 48 hours with no sign of it easing off. Now I put it down to two things, either i am now suffering an adverse reaction to metformin, or I have been eating a lot of sugar free chewing gum which i never used to, and have now stopped. Question is:
  1. Should I stop taking metformin, give it a day or so and see what happens? or
  2. Should I be seeking medical advice now?

Ask you doctor or nurse for Slow release Metformin, Its much kinder on your stomach. I no longer get the problems your describing.

I would seek medical advice as 48 hrs with diarrhoea can lead to severe fluid loss. Once stomach is settled, ask for Metformin SR ( slow release ).
