Hello 4 weeks ago I took myself to a/e with serve abdominal pains, after blood tests and scans they found my pancreas was extremely inflamed! After more test, my blood sugar levels where 24.5, my cholesterol was 11! Spent 7 days in hospital and came out diabetic. At the moment I don't know if I am type 1 or 2, I have to fill out a book 4 times a day with my blood sugar levels, and on the 2nd of May I will be seeing a diabetic doctor who will hopefully tell me if I'm type 1 or 2. When I left hospital I was told to take insulin once a day, the slow releasing one, after 1 week, they have now put me on novorapid 3x a day. I'm really struggling with my blood sugars, can't get it below 10! I have now given up smoking, which I'm still struggling with, I have changed my diet to something more healthy, but the thing I am struggling with the most is, the impact it's having on me daily, the constant checking blood sugar levels, the insulin injections when I'm at work, feels like a 2nd job, but I only have myself to blame

Hi there, others will be along soon but one initial question, How are you to blame? x

Hello and welcome @LukeYy :)

There's a lot of emotions experienced with diagnosis such as denial, bargaining, blame, depression so there's no doubt you will be experiencing many of them, is there anyone close to you you can talk to ? Your team should be supporting you also with managing your levels so a call to them on Tuesday would be good to get some more advice with your doses. Ultimately getting you below 10 is going to help you feel better mentally as the excess glucose in your system will be making you feel tired and affecting your mood. Try to drink lots of water to help your kidneys flush the glucose through. The thing about diagnosis is to go easy on yourself, the most important thing is getting you feeling better again, so quitting the fags is great, as is eating healthy and cutting out sugar, and being kind to yourself, have a look through the forum for input from other members, keep a close eye on your levels and if struggling over the weekend try and get some gentle exercise, but please carry fast acting glucose on you at all levels in case you go low as your taking insulin now.

Those are not reasons to blame yourself. Diabetes can happen to anyone. If you are type 1, for instance, it can take weeks to get it below ten as your body adjusts to getting insulin again. Don't blame yourself! Talk to your GP, the people at the hospital and us here. If you are on twitter there is a big online community too if you use hashtags like #gbdoc or #doc You are not alone. There is no right way to do this. We are here.
