Heart experts at Southampton’s hospitals are using a groundbreaking drug-free treatment which involves ‘blasting’ nerves in the kidneys with radio waves to reduce high blood pressure.

The technique, called renal denervation (RDN), is performed in around 45 minutes under local anaesthetic and is the first alternative treatment for patients who have been unable to control the condition using conventional medication.

Around 30 per cent of people in England suffer from high blood pressure – known as hypertension – which causes the body to pump blood too forcefully through the arteries and heart.

Complications of untreated hypertension can cause organ damage, including heart attacks, stroke or kidney disease, and lead to premature death.

After guiding a device into the arteries of the kidneys through the groin using X-ray images, doctors deliver high frequency signals to burn off overactive nerves, increasing blood flow to the organs and reducing levels of a hormone linked to high blood pressure.

“This treatment really is a milestone in the field as, for the first time, we are able to say to people who cannot control their blood pressure with medication now have an option to limit their risk of stroke or heart disease,” said Dr James Wilkinson, a consultant cardiologist at Southampton General Hospital.

“The device allows us to gain access to the kidneys and fire short bursts of radio waves to burn overactive nerves, meaning we can bring blood pressure down to normal levels in most patients.”

Interesting news item Tony, thanks for posting

I wonder when such treatment is available worldwide...Though it is of course great that something at least happens in the research of high blood pressure treatment

Yes, I can understand how for some patients, this treatment will be an excellent advancement and must be applauded....well done that Southampton crew, and I must add at this point, the HQ of my cardio team

For others though, it would have little if no effect.
Many hypertensives are hit with smooth muscle problems in that vasocontriction is the primary cause (tightening of the blood vessels) so drugs that cause the smooth muscle to relax are needed.
It is best described as more pumping pressure is required from the heart to push the blood volume around and by relaxing the 'squeeze' exerted on the blood vessels allows the heart to pump the same volume with a lot less effort. There are of course other causes but the constriction problem is a major contributor to the total and thank goodness daily pills go a long way into relieving the problem.

As you have probably gathered, I suffer with vasoconstriction and I am sure I owe my life to my daily calcium channel blockers and my cardio team that give me an excellent 115 to 120 over 60 to 65 :D
