5:2 Diet - has anyone on Insulin tried this?

Hi All
Havent been around for a while - feeling really sorry for myself over the summer - seemed no matter what I did my weight was creeping upward. I am almost back at the heaviest weight I have ever been (about 6 years after I was diagnosed, and 6 months after a heart attack 5 years ago :( )

All I know is I really need to do something about this before it gets any worse. I exercise at least three times a week - either dancing on a Wii machine, on an exercise bike, a walk along the river, or a swim - I try to keep it varied, but no matter how little, or much, I eat the weight is creeping at a 1lb or so a fortnight :? My doctor is being no help at all - suggesting more exercise and less food (I honestly probably eat less than a 10 year old most of the time!!).

Several non-diabetic friends seem to be having great success with the 5:2 diet - weight losses over a 6 month period varying from 2 stone to half a stone - so would love to give it a try if I can find a safe way of doing it.

Everything I have read seems to indicate that Type II diabetics on diet, or oral meds only, are fine to give it a try but that it is not suitable for insulin dependent (which I am) so I would be really interested to know if anyone on injected meds has taken the plunge and given this a try.

I believe that with careful management it should be possible for a sensible Type II diabetic but wonder if there are pitfalls I haven't thought about. I already adjust my insulin daily dependent on readings and what I am eating, and am usually fairly accurate with BG readings.

Anyway, enough rambling, would be interested to hear what anyone has to offer.
thanks

Hello Trulee

Haven't been on forum regularly for some time now and have just found your post. I have not tried this regime but am seriously thinking about it now because for many reasons my life has become a train crash and I need to try and get back on track. I too am type 2 and am oral meds and insulin mix. Because of this I have spoken to my DSN - like you am concerned about the insulin. She says that I just need to keep a close eye on the "fasting" days and that I may not need the insulin on those days. She also said that the 5:2 works very well for many people - so I just need to give it a go :).

Let me know if you have given it a go and I will get back to you if/when I try too.

I tried it. I'm type 1 on a pump. Unfortunately I tried it with not enough necessary info so it was a bit of a disaster.

I restricted myself to 600 cals on the two days of fasting, eating high protein, low carbs. On these two fasting days I struggled with exercise. I felt drained and tired even though it was just two days a week. The longer I attempted this diet the more my body felt out of sorts and sluggish. I attempted it for two months before I quit. I'm now low carbing which my diabetes specialist recommended as an alternative to 5:2. Low carbing (60g max a day) is working for me so far.

I'm Type 1 since childhood (35 years) and follow the 5:2 way of life!! No problems. Fast days I have my usual breakfast and insulin 140 cals - 2 carbs ( unsweetened soya milk and coffee). I test at lunch time but i don't eat. If my bg is raised and needs correcting I may have half to 1 unit, if it's ok I do nothing and my next quick acting injection will be at 6pm when I have the remainder of my 500 cal allowance. Fast days are a great way to see if your on the right dose of background, if I'm high at 6pm and was spot on at lunch time I may consider increasing my morning background.
