50 UP, 50 TO GO.

People who don't have Diabetes, and don't know anyone with it, but think they know all about it.
Hello,
New to creating a thread, although I have received the newsletter and been a member for some time.
Today, December 4th, 2014, I celebrate 50 years to the day since I started injections for type 1 diabetes. Entered hospital as a 14 year old boy on December 3rd, 1964, and started the jabs on the 4th. Seems a long time ago, and managed to overcome the problems of diabetes at school, work, and now into retirement. Developed asthma, blood pressure problems, had a large number of teeth removed two weeks ago, and recently diagnosed with a heart murmur, so I have increased the exercise, eating more fruit and vegetables ang generally improved further the healthier lifestyle, in the hope of another 50 years!!!!
 
Hi and welcome, you have obviously had very good control over the years, well done.
Guess you must have seen some changes in treatment methods over the years ?,

Congratulations!! Have you got your 50yr medal yet?! Am due for mine next autumn (need to ask to see gp's record to get exact date so I can celebrate!). It's only since reading lots online that I realised how few people there are like us and I feel so proud that I've lived so well with it and never doubted I'd be around after 50yrs of T1 - many younger people seem to think they're doomed post diagnosis sadly - really upsets me that they fret so much, instead of getting on with a more positive attitude. Boy am I going to party on my 'diaversity'!! Hope you will too.

Hello Peter and welcome to the forum. Many congratulations on reaching 50 years of insulin injections. I'm a couple of months behind you as diagnosed Easter 1965 aged 4 1/2.
 
Congrats Peter......I'm also not too far away from the 50 years. Time flies that's for sure

You certainly started young, Look forward to reaching the fifty.

Many thanks, will apply for the medal this week. As you say, the secret is to not let the diabetes get to you. My original specialist said it is a disorder not a disease, and I feel I have diabetes, not diabetes has me. Take great care of yourself, and many thanks.

yes things have changed a bit, the old metal syringes soaked in surgical spirit were the worst. Thanks again.

I think Diabetes UK or JDRF should hold an annual shin dig for everyone who reaches 50 yrs of T1 every year! Would be great to exchange notes, laugh at the good and bad times and have some recognition for our 50 years of time (like porridge or hard labour sometimes!). God I think that's a brilliant idea though I say so myself....
