I’m a Type 1 diabetic and had my first baby (a girl) 7 months ago. She was 9lbs at birth and is still in the 90th percentile for weight. She is completely happy and healthy and I feel so lucky as we know that T1 pregnancies aren’t easy!

I’ve had a lot of comments recently from people saying that she’s going to be tall because of her size. It got me wondering - do T1 babies always stay bigger than the average or does it even out over time? I’m just curious really, do any type 1 mums out there have tall kids?

Hi,

First off I’m a T1 bloke. Born to non T1 parents.
Though my dad did develop T2..

We are a short family with me being marginally the tallest out of us all?

My little sister was born at this weight. 9lbs. I remember my mum specifically saying so.
She’s built like Kylie Minogue? (Australian singer actress?)

To be frank & respectfully you might need to look at the heritage regarding a possible height.

I’m just bumping this up in the hope others may settle what I see as one of those “wait & see’s..”

Non diabetic parents here - dad T2 in later life, I was a 9lb baby (my poor mum was tiny at 5’1” my dad was 6’) my brother was 2lb 10oz at 3 months premature 61 years ago he was a miracle baby to survive. I’m 5’3” he’s 6’2” like @Jaylee says I think it’s more to do with heritage than birth weight how tall you will be

You might find this calculator either useful or a bit of fun :)

Not type 1 but have always had problems dealing with carbs, all my adult life.
My son was over 9 lb born, in the top 95 percentile and always the tallest in his class. He is over 6 ft tall and a stay at home dad to six kids.
My second pregnancy did not go well as I was pressured into a 'healthy' diet and ended up with preeclampsia and lying to my HCPs in the face of a thread of enforced hospitalisation, but that is a whole different story. My glucose levels must have been dreadful during the second trimester, but at least we both survived.
