Hi,

Is anyone having to take 80mg statins. I'm confused as my cholesterol level was 5.5 only .5 above the correct level but been prescribed 80mg forca start but understand blood clots and diabetes doesn't go well.

I'm a type 1 diabetic and have been for 21 years and am starting to get higher blood fasting sugar levels especially during the night as i woke up this morning with a reading of 16.5 going up 25.7 and correction dose hardly brought me down. I had no ketones thankfully.

Has anyone else experienced higher sugar levels or any other side effects regarding there diabetes.

Thanks.

If these high bg levels are a regular occurrence then I would suggest you mention it to your Dr, but 80mg dose seems to be quite a high dose considering your TC figure is only 5.5, my brother was started on a 80mg dose but he had a TC of 9 and the dose was reduced once his cholesterol levels came down.

I would ask for a full lipid breakdown of your cholesterol, as a guideline here are the NICE recommendations:

  • Your total cholesterol level should be below 4.0mmol/l.
  • LDL levels should be less than 2.0mmol/l.
  • HDL levels should be 1.0mmol/l or above in men and 1.2mmol/l or above in women.
  • Triglyceride levels should be 1.7mmol/l or less.

I had a cholesterol level of 6.8 this year and was put on 10mg of statins. The dosage you've been given does sound high considering you were only 5.5. It's probably a good idea to speak with your doc about it and at the very least try and get the dosage lowered. For me, this year is the first time I've agreed to go on statins and that is only because my diet not being as good as it used to be because I've eliminated a lot of foods. Previously I controlled high cholesterol with diet. I heard fish oil tablets are supposed to help lower cholesterol as well so I take those too and for my general wellbeing as supposed to be good for inflammation in the body which I have a problem with. I wish you the best. :)

I would definitely have a word with your doctor. That is a high dose considering your 5.5. Statins are well known to raise BS levels - it even says so on the leaflets.

Hi. I agree that statin dose is very high and needs to be justified by the GP. Your total cholesterol isn't as important as your lipids ratios and other risk factors. I suggest you have a fasting blood test with lipids tested so you can have a good check on your current cholesterol. I suggest your level may now be too low? Personally I would go less than around 4 total without good reason as your body needs cholesterol. Note that statins do increase blood sugar and that may be why your BS has gone up. I think you need a serious review with your GP.

I was put on 80mg but only when my cholesterol shot up to 10.1. After 3 months it had fallen to 4.6 and the best part is my lipid specialist said that doubling the dose from 40mg did not explain such a big drop. So, I'm none the wiser.

This is my thoughts as a Type 2 so this might not be the same for Type 1. Doctors have been advised to initiate statin therapy as a precautionary measure so I would suggest mentioning this to your GP and stop raking them. There's a my thing about "bad" cholesterol anyway which with some online research you can find out more.

I am a type 2, not type 1, so I can't comment on your bs. But I do believe that a cholesterol level of 5 to 6 is perfectly fine and even advisable over a certain age. So 80mg seems ott to me. My cholesterol is 5.8 and I have reduced my atorvastatin to 10mg and I intend to come off them completely.

Wild horses wouldn't get me to take statins!
Every so often my doctor will bring up the subject but he knows only too well that I am completely against them.
There has never been any trials done and shown regarding statins and there was a very informative TV program about this a few years back which showed the affects they had on some people and more importantly a man who had become a complete invalid through taking them not to mention the pains they can cause.

I suffer with a very bad back and when the doctor prescribed them for me the pain in my back became extremely bad and it was my sister who told me about them. As soon as I stopped taking them it was so much better.
I must point out that I am type 2
