Hi there, my son is very newly diagnosed (2 weeks) and has just had his first hypo - it was nearly luchtime and took BG reading, 3.4 gave him some apple juice and he had his lunch straight away, took reading 15 minutes later and it was 3.8, gave him more apple juice and re-read 15 minutes later, 5.4. I know this reading is fine, but confused as to what to do about his lunchtime insulin, presume this doesnt need to be given. Please advise anyone. We are still learning and know it will take time, but quite anxious!!!

Hi @farmstar25 I am tagging @Robinredbreast and @noblehead both are experienced T1's and will be able to offer you the information.

As a fellow parent to a 9 year old I can just offer you a virtual hug, there is lots of info and help on the forum from parents in same situation as you are in.

Being newly diagnosed I would tread carefully @farmstar25 and see how his bg levels behave, if he does go high then you could always give him a correction dose when he next eats.

A good question to ask your sons DSN next time you see them, always a difficult one advising when a child is so young and newly diagnosed.

Thankyou for replying, he went to 14.8 but currently playing outside. I knew we were being lulled into a false sense of security as had 4 days of green readings!!!!!!

Hi, It can be an anxious and scary time, but in time it will get a little easier for you both. Just wondering what your son had for lunch ? so you didn't give any Insulin? As a newly diagnosed he maybe in the honeymoon period, so his Insulin needs would be a lot less. Have you checked what his reading is now and does he have snacks in between meals, as children can be so active and are still growing ?
When a hypo occurs the body fights to get it back up again and that tends to be a high, so a bit of a yoyo affect. Have you had a look at the parents section, you might find some useful info from other parents on there.
All the best and I hope things settle down for him soon.

If you missed out his normal lunch time insulin, that could be why he went high (unless he normally goes high like that).

Check with his team about what to do if that happens again. Sometimes they may advise you to give the meal insulin after rather than before meals when he's low, just as an example (so that the insulin doesn't act too quickly while he's recovering from the hypo).

What insulin regime is your son on? My top tips are to test lots and keep records of food, insulin and test results as that's really helpful information for his team and you, and to learn to count carbs - that is, to adjust his insulin according to the number of carbs he eats.

Check out the Type 1 section here and feel free to ask as many questions as you want :)
