Hi, my name is Jan and I am 62. I have just been told that my HbC1a has just tipped into the type 2 area and I have an eye screening booked. Other than that no info about whether I need medication/test strips etc yet. Feeling a bit shocked. Does everyone newly diagnosed feel this way?

Welcome @JanH6246
Yes I think it's pretty normal to be shocked when first diagnosed, unfortunately the lack of information and advice is also fairly common
Luckily you are only just into diabetic levels so it shouldn't be too difficult to get those numbers down.
The most important thing you need to know is that all carbohydrates when digested will turn to glucose and raise your blood sugar levels. The only carbs that don't are the fiber which pass right through, the colour of the carbs makes no difference. So if someone advises you to have wholemeal bread/pasta or brown rice or tells you slow release carbs like porridge are good, they are wrong. It doesn't matter how long it takes to release the carbs, the resulting sugar will get into your blood eventually.
A glucose meter is a very good idea, by testing before a meal and again around 2hrs later we can see what that meal has done to our sugar levels. Then decide if we need to try and cut a few more carbs from that meal in the future or maybe cross that meal off our menu.
Have a look at the link below my post for more information

Hello and welcome @JanH6246

Yes it is common to feel shocked on diagnosis. I felt not only shock but devastation.

The advice from @catinahat is right.

The first place to start is to get a glucose meter. Many doctors do not believe it is necessary but in my view they are wrong. The meter allows you to have information so you can make decisions about your health.

This place is an amazing place full of very helpful people with a wealth of experience I am sure that when the shock wears off you will find a great deal of help on the site.

Welcome and good luck.

Hi @JanH6246

We are in the millions around the world I suspect.

Shocked here to & left with too little information, which I find reading others postings is pretty normal, sadly.

Bad news is the DX.....
The good news is you found what I think is THE Best site for type 2 diabetics.

Above two posts spot on.

And it's a most friendly site to boot.

Ask questions, the only stupid questions are the one we don't ask.

You have made a great start, and don't worry, there will be plenty of hand holding along the way as you ease into your own journey.

Hi Jan

Another 62 year old woman here that was diagnosed about a month ago.

Totally shocked as I didn't have symptoms. I was given a prescription for Metformin and had terrible side effects from it.

Dietician gave me all kinds of bad advice - such as I could still have two cookies (biscuits) a day and if I wanted some cake just don't eat any starches at supper!

My own research led me here and I spent days reading so many posts. It all made sense and I liked how everyone was super at giving advice. I decided to try LCHF and slowly my numbers are going down although I am not losing weight at this point.
