A bit of info required

Hi There,

My name is Nicky and I have just been diagnosed with Diabetes type 2 2 months ago. I live i Spain and the info here is very basic. I have been put on metformin 850mg 2 times per day, it took a while to get used to them but I now feel ok with them after about two weeks.
I of course am whatching what I eat and rarley eat what I should not, but it's qwuite hard As I enjoy fruit and like a few glasses of wine. I am 40 years old only and am 3 stone overweight.( which I am trying hard to loose!)
I test 3 times per day and my readings are mostly between 8-10.8 ( mostly 9 or 10). I have looked on the internet but can't quite see how these readings are are they ok? do you trhink I should get more medication? am I allowed to take more? I am a bit confused and the doc's here don't really help much...I understand spanish but not medical level. I will be back in the uk over x mas and have made an apointment in the uk, but in the interim. Can some one gove me a bit of advice of what I should do. I am trying to take this very seriously, but belive that maybe I am also in a bit of denial...I have a 5 year old son and really want to take care of myself. But worried actually.

Can some one give me a bit of solid advice?

Welcome to the forum. Have a good look around and if you have more questions just fire away. There is usually someone with an answer.

As a Type 2 the current UK NICE Guidelines for Bg levels are as follows.
Fasting (waking)................between 4 - 7 mmol/l.
2 hrs after meals...............no more than 8.5 mmol/l.
If you are able to get lower post meal numbers then so much the better. Never lower than 4 mmol/l though as this is considered to be hypoglycaemic. As you can see you need to improve those levels a little. Plenty of time to get to grips with that though.

As for more Med's ......you are better tweaking your diet. Even though you might think it is healthy there is usually some room for improvement. We can help you with advice for that.

The best advice you'll get don't rely on the Doctors to give you all the advice you need. If you've got internet access you're already 1 step ahead of the game.

You'll need to do LOTS of research, and (unfortunately) lots of trial and error with what you are eating.

You need to find out what food effects your BG (Blood Glucose), by testing prior to eating, 1 hour after eating, and then again 2 hours after eating.

You might be surprised to find that some of the fruit you are eating can hit your BG quite hard, and if you do find that with any of the fruits you are eating regularly, you'll probably want to cut down...

Also - Red Wine is known to have a beneficial effect on lots of T2s.

The biggest problem I think with the advice is the same world over as far as I can see eat plenty of starchy carbohydrate at every meal. Its wrong on two counts it perpetuates the old myth that complex carbs are all broken down into glucose slowly thats complete and utter BS, check out the GI diet it explains this in far more detail. The other point thats missed is portion sizes! You need to keep an eye on the amount of carbohydrate total you consume and that means you need to watch your portion sizes. Again the GI diet is a very handy guide here. You need to have smaller portions of pasta, potatoes etc than you might be used too.
