Hi all,
just had the results of my latest HBA1C test. In January i was 6.5 and since that time ive lost 22lb. Total weight loss since last July is 36 lb. My latest result was 6.2 and my doctor has said if i get to 6 and she suspects that this may happen by my next test in 3 months she will declassify me as a diabetic!! So i have cured myself. Had a long but pleasant argument with her about it, once a diabetic, always a diabetic and if i eat 'normal] foods normally such as backed been, sausages and new potatoes with toast, 2 hours later ime 9.5!! She said that i could be normal with diabetic tendencies!!! I told her i had to radically change my lifestyle to get such a result and forgoe all the foods i love, crisps potatoes, cakes, biscuits, bread, chocolate, sweets etc. Should i have done so well i ask myself??

The only bonus is that ive got my cholesterol level down from 7.7 to 5.2 and i suspect this will go lower over the next few months.

I always thought that once you were diabetic it stays with you for life and there isnt a cure yet?

Pleased but not pleased.

Andy, our GP used the word 'cure' to my husband last time we saw her. She said if he loses another stone, or 2 inches from his waistline, then he'll be cured and she would take him off the Met (one a day)

I did question the word cure and she admitted that if he went back to eating as he was pre-diagnosis, then the diabetic symptoms would return. So yes, once a diabetic, always a diabetic I would say.

I think you should be very pleased with yourself!

Thanks for that Julia,

i have resisted all medication inc the metformin cos if i had just the one alcoholic drink, the hangover was within 20 minutes and lasted well into the next afternoon so i really should be pleased about that.

My next blood test will be in July but ime off to Cornwall for a fishing holiday just before that and am tempted to let the lot go for a week and eat and drink what i like. Perhaps that will bu**er up the next results.

Well done Mothman!!

I can see what you mean by the fact that you will have to maintain this healthy lifestyle in order to maintain your " Non Diabetic Status " However you would have had to do that to keep healthy as a " Named Diabetic " too. However with significantly higher risks of complications. So good for you and again well done!

Well done Andy

I've had that discussion with my GP and we've agreed once a diabetic, always a diabetic. We decided I am in remission, but if I put the weight back on again and start eating rubbish, then the diabetes will rear it's ugly head again.

Oh Piglets.

Good news on your result, but I saw the nurse today and she assured me that if I lost all this weight I would no longer be Diabetic. I thought it might be a tad optimistic.

Good job there are others better informed around to put things straight.

Eh? :eh: Is there any other health condition that seems to cause so much confusion in HCP's as diabetes?

I don't get it, seriously I don't. If you have got high blood pressure then you have to stay on tablets and are always considered as having this condition.

Same with asthma, you may not need to use an inhaler more than once in a blue moon but you're still an asthmatic!

Is it any wonder that some of us try to avoid our HCP's...

Andy, congratulations, you took your diabetes by the scruff of the neck and shook it! You have showed some real determination since day one and never seem to have wavered, I envy you

Well, no matter what, congratulations for making such a big impact on your health. You are inspirational!

Thanks guys n gals,
never thought i was inspirational, just an ordinary guy, getting more frustrated with the system. My Doctor is a very nice lady, but i could see her getting caught up with what she has been told to say re the NHS cut backs and her heart just wasnt with it.
I will see her again in 3 months for the next blood test but as i have a holiday to the latter end and will let my self go for a week.

I really have tried hard to sort my diet over the last 3 months, tried the 600 cal diet for 2 weeks but it wasnt for me. Too much to do looking after mum, dogs, and me. Decided to give up most carbs instead and so far its worked.

Maybe i should have decided to say 'sod' it and accepted the pills instead.
