A little confused

I often look at all the "Headers" on the opening page and choose information that I think may be of use, but I have yet to see someone who is like me. I have been diagnosed type 2 diabetic for over 4 years. I take 40mg Gliclazade amongst other medication, I drink 2 cans of beer and perhaps occasionally a shot or two every day. I eat anything. I have breakfast which may be a full english or 2 rounds of toast and marmalade plus my evening meal (I must admit that the portions are smaller in the evening). The only thing that I can honestly say effects me is constantly feeling tired. I can get up in the morning have a cup of coffee and go back to sleep or I can sit in the armchair watching TV and I drop off. (because of water retention tablets, I do always have to get up early morning to toilet) I don't suffer with highs or lows, I eat sweets. Oh and I have smoked for the last 50 years and enjoy it. I go to a clinic once a year and they check my sugar levels via a pin prick into a meter. Always they say, this is okay but loose some weight and stop smoking. I don't, but due to other problems it is very hard and a little dangerous for me to exercise. So really what I am saying is my lifestyle in eating and drinking has not changed and no medical person has said don't do this or eat that except for the don't smoke nurses (Who I often see at the rear of the clinic having a fag). AM I UNIQUE ?

Hi. It looks like you are only 'mildly' diabetic (the professionals and others hate this being said). What I mean by this is that as you are a bit overweight you probably have a little insulin resistance, but that may be all. As a result you are able to be quite free with eating and exercise which is great. I would be inclined to keep some control on the carbs to avoid any increase in blood sugar in the future but you obviously don't need to be as strict as others including myself. We are all different!

I'd be interested to know what your blood sugar levels actually are.

I bet if you ate differently you wouldnt be so tired

you wont be the first person to discover you may have sleep apnoea, some research says it can lead to diabetes, some research says diabetes causes it, why not ask your gp to refer you to a sleep clinic just in case.
