Hello,

This is my first time using the forum so apologies if I'm asking this in the wrong place. I'm hoping to get a little advice on something which my GP couldn't seem to help with.

I had some symptoms which prompted my GP to do some blood tests to check for Diabetes. Tests were carried out in November of last year (though I seem to recall these were only run as part of some other tests and because I have a family history - father and grandmother - of Diabetes) and just last month; all results, on both occasions, have been 'normal'.

A few months ago I began to experience extreme itching of my palms and the soles of my feet, despite no dermatological/allergy, etc, problem being present. Then started the most ridiculous craving for rice and, at roughly the same time, a constantly dry mouth/excessive thirst. All I want to do is... eat rice and drink water. I'm quite embarrassed to say that I'm now eating rice almost to the exclusion of anything else and even more embarrassed to say that, on two occasions over the last few weeks, I've got up in the middle of the night just to cook myself yet more rice. My diet is usually fairly varied and healtrhy(ish!).

I mentioned the excessive thirst and severe carbohydrate craving (though it really is just limited to rice, not carbs in general) to my GP but on this occasion I just got a shrug of the shoulders.

Could anyone please help with an explanation as to why the above is happening? I've tried researching my 'symptoms' on-line and invariably it throws up Diabetes as a cause but of course my blood results were all normal.

Thanks for reading, sorry it became a bit lengthy!

If it's been almost 12 months since you had the previous blood tests, my suggestion is to have the tests again.

Alternatively, get yourself a glucometer and test your BG at 1 hr and 2 hrs after eating. If the levels are higher than 7.8, then present the findings to your GP and ask for further tests.

Hello Denise, sounds like you are preggers to me!

Seriously, food cravings are usually to do with the mind more than the body. Itching can have many causes, itchy skin is a symptom of T2 diabetes, but not on the feet/hands.

I crave for chips, beer, cream cakes, jam doughnuts and so on. I just can't have them. To be fair, I have educated my taste buds somewhat
and manage without any of them.

Excessive thirst is a symptom of T2 but on it's own does not prove or disprove a diagnosis. You need some further tests and a doctor is the one to get them done.

May I suggest that you should be discussing this with your doctor?

If you DO suspect you have diabetes, the last thing you should be eating is copious amounts of rice in any form.

I recommend you get over to your Dr PDQ and get a proper test for diabetes. It sounds to me as though your body have become SO used to high blood glucose, you get withdrawal symptoms as soon as the BG loadings start to fall and that is NOT good!
