Hi,

sorry it’s an essay, but wanted to give background as I am at my limit now with this flippin condition. I wasn’t sure where to post this on the forum either.

I was told 12 years ago I had type 2 diabetes. I was overweight, but was like always trying to lose weight so was just in delight when I was. I had no other symptoms apart from this and it was only picked up because I had blood tests at hospital because of another issue I was having. I resisted going on any tablets at the time as my Dad is also diabetic (type 2) and by this point was on insulin and I had seen all the issues he had. I saw the dietitian and lost almost 6 stone on about 18 months. My Doc practice was very good at the time, and I was given a meter and have had one ever since. After about 4 years (just under) my HBA1C levels were rising again even though I had not put weight back on was still exercising etc. so reluctantly I agreed to go on metformin, this was closely followed by gliclazide, which worked ok but when I was due an operation the hospinal pre op took my HBA1C and it was too high at 64 to have the op so they upped my gliclazide to the highest amount and duly at a HBA1C of 57 they operated. Now since being on the meds I found I put weight on at least 3 stone went back on, so I was encouraged to try trulicity. This was sold to me as something that would help my BS come down and help me lost weight by curbing my appetite- I wasn’t eating any more than I had been with the dietian but eager to lose the weight again I went with it. Needless to say BS rose steadily and I was changed to a once a week levenmir, this did not work either, I always wanted to give these things enough time to work whilst also trying ways to lose weigh, but in 2020 my own fear came true when I was put on insulin- Insultard to inject morning and evening I still took metformin and was changed to sitagliptin instead of gliclazide. the amounts I had to take because of severe insulin resistance meant they changed this to Humilin M3 twice a day and the sitagliptin got changed to Algogliptin and I take this once a day and metformin twice a day. I called my DN in tears last March as I had put on nearly 2.5 stone in the time I had been on the insulin, the reply was sympathetic for my issue and when I said I had the brown skin on my neck and under my arms like I had before diagnosis (not knowing they were Symptoms) I wondered what the hell I could do about it. They said you need to take less insuli, fine but that means by BS goes up into double figures all the time am I not doing myself damage that way? They asked another practice with more dedicated diabetic department to see me but they refused and said I just needed to be referred to a weight loss clinic. I know they did do this but have heard nothing from that day to this. I made an a last July with the Doctor and explained how I was feeling about it all and wanting to see an endocrinologist and get a peptide c test ( after reading things on here wasn’t sure if I wasn’t type 1.5 - I was 36 when I was told I had it). My Dad, my Mum, my brother, my Dads brother, my and my cousin have all been told we are type 2. my Dad, my Cousin and I are on insulin. I also have another cousin who is a type 1. His response was about losing weight and had i thought about weight loss surgery? The answer was no, but he referred me anyway- and it won’t surprise anyone to read that I have heard nothing.

I am currently giving Huel a try, my brother has lost an amazing amount of weight steadily over nearly 12 months now. My progress is slower because in the insulin resistance but I have lost about 9lbs and come to a bit of a halt for the moment but I will persevere. I tried slimfast keto for three months solid and the only thing I lost was the money spent on it. I do low carb recipes as well and do make sure I don’t have too many carbs on an every day basis. I have tried pretty much all diets in my lifetime - the only time I didnt is when I worked at riding stables and farm in my late teens ( I miso those days)

my question is reading the above (if I have not put you to sleep ) what would you advise I ask for next, if anything. I have seriously got to the point where I feel like stopping everything because I am so down about it all. I am no better off now weight wise than I was 12 years ago.

The problem you have is not seeing a specialist endocrinologist. You should have been referred many years ago. The reason you are getting worse is because you are being treated for something that you have not had the diagnostic tests for.

I was in a similar situation over ten years ago, because the GP's couldn't understand how a type two without meds, was still going hypoglycaemic. I wasn't T2!

Insist to your practice to get a referral! And get those diagnostic tests.

Thank you, I have tried asking for this before, but will just have to keep on at the, until it happens.
I could give you the name of my endocrinologist, who does private and NHS patients. I take it you are in the U.K. It will also depend on your availability to travel. Don't post your location, if you are interested I will use the pm button to give you details.
