i was just told to take a vit d supplement... No amount told specifically. I was never even told how deficient I was. Just called me and said I need to take a vitamin d supplement as I'm deficient. I have had another test done to check all that again. Doubt it's improved much as I read it takes a year to start feeling better. I was told I probably wouldn't even notice any symptoms with it.Did your Dr prescribe vit D for you? When I was tested my levels were non existent. I was put on 10,000mg daily for 3 months and I now take 2 adcal morning and evening. I felt terrible before this was sorted out. Lo carb didn't work for me either sent my BS really high and didn't matter what I tried it didn't come down.. I'm now back at weightwatchers and have lost 7lbs so far. My daughter who has PCOS has lost 13lbs over the last 7 weeks.
Low carb doesn't work for everyone - no diet ever does! And I wish you all the best in finding one that DOES work, but please don't convince yourself that your symptoms are caused by your current diet.
You have clearly not yet exhausted the hormone imbalance possibilities, or had your vit d levels re-checked.
Or investigated half the things on Denise's list.
You've got a long way to go, by way of tests and experimentation, and bullying your medical professionals, before every avenue has been followed to a dead end.
And, at the same time, if you want to eat more carbs, you can do that anytime, whenever you like. I do.
Because of my PCOS I am susceptible to insulin resistance, I'm type 1, though so double whammy. I take metformin for this and my sugars have been good. I never have artificial sweeteners. My diet has been the cleanest in years. I haven't had it retested but I had a guilty blood count test done the other day so maybe that will show something.
Can I ask why you are posting on my thread if i sound so self pitying as you put it. If you don't like the way I "sound" go away off my thread. I actually think that you have just used the excuse of saying how self pitying I am to get your oh so painful story of being however much overweight. I haven't answered back with self pity. I am just giving all the information and saying I have tried all of what was suggested. Reached the conclusion that the diet isn't for me through the help of others .Oh for goodness sake!
Your posts throughout this thread have had an undertone of self pity.
That is ok. We all go through that.
But you have had several people posting considerate, helpful suggestions.
And each time you have bounced back a response about how unique and particularly difficult your situation is.
But what you don't seem to be taking on board is that most of the people here have gone through their own long, painful, traumatic versions of what you are currently experiencing. Every one of us is trying to help you based on our own miserable personal experiences.
Have you actually noticed that people are talking about the problems they have had? The way they have overcome them? In my case I was where you are now for 20 years! And ended up 15 stone overweight.
Other people who have posted to this thread have similar (but different experiences)
But you have managed to ignore that and concentrate on how terrible your situation is.
We know that. We empathise with you. And we have bent over backwards to be supportive.
Was this whole thread nothing more than you justifying your change of diet?
Because you could have done that with a lot less page space.
Do you take metformin for you PCOS?I don't know about the others, but I felt that way for a bit with low carb then I included fruit in my diet and I started to feel better (banana, strawberries, nectarines, etc). Some cannot tolerate it because it sends their sugar levels high, but I eat to my meter. I started with half a serving then moving gradually to a full serving once I can tolerate it. I was dx with PCOS first, then t2. I also am on the low side of normal on my thyroid tests. I also take multivitamins and vit b tablets. I used to feel really tired and heavy before that. I'm currently having problems with my period ATM bec of PCOS but I'm not as tired as I used to.
Do you take metformin for you PCOS?
I do it helps with my blood sugars and you would think with great blood sugars I would feel much better. It's just my legs feel so heavy and achey all the time. I think it definitely is this diet with a mixture of other things, but I notice if I have a bit more carbs I feel lots better. I wonder whether the low carb and metformin are not helping. It would be fantastic if I could do this diet, get the blood sugars I am getting now (which I love btw) and feel energised. I am definitely coming around to adding more carbs.
Maybe the lower thyroid come hand in hand with PCOS. I have seen a few people on this thread say they have lower thyroid with PCOS. It might be part of the plethora of reasons why we find it difficult to control our weight and blood glucose. It seems too common.Hi! I'm not taking metformin ATM, I was prescribed initially, then started tapering off when my sugar was stabilizing by doing low carb and exercise. I asked my endo specifically if I needed metformin for pcos and told me I should take it if I wanted to get pregnant, otherwise if my sugars are okay, she would like me to be off-metformin and continue on with monitoring and lifestyle modification such as diet and exercise.
My latest ultrasound was two weeks ago, I have pcos for both ovaries so I'm currently on progesterone/pill to correct my cycle. I also had my thyroid checked, they were also low normal.
Yes, maybe you need to experiment, and try to gradually add in carbs, not exactly the ones I have mentioned but maybe the low gi ones like berries, or more veg. You've mentioned that you felt better when you added carbs to your diet, then may be eat to your meter. From zero energy now I don't feel as lethargic anymore. I felt better with a more 'balanced whole food diet' but of course watching out on the unnecessary carbs, avoiding refined/processed carbs. I also take multivitamin supplements. And my sugars are stabilized as well so it's a win- win situation. I feel good, have more energy and the numbers are also good. Experiment, try it out and check if it'll work for you. Best of luck, hopefully
Your energy levels will come back up
I never feel hungry on the diet. The only issue is the drag I feel.My hubby has never tested for ketones on his lower carb eating and constantly lost 2-3lb a week every week. Tonight is zucchini (courgette) lasagne with asparagus, cabbage and leeks followed by chocolate torte pudding and cream. Cheese for brunch. Lots of coconut oil in chocolate torte with desiccated coconut n ground almonds n orange zest n juice.. And cocoa powder!!!
He doesn't go hungry!!
Honest, I'm the T1 diabetic.. I have always ate low carb (not enough fat though). He has lost 4st in total.
Coconut oil, coconut flour, ground almonds etc and ketogenic recipes off kindle books been fantastic. You do not need to ketone check.
I read somewhere that it takes a year to feel better after taking vitamin D supplements. If you have already been diagnosed as Vitamin D3 deficient, then the sooner you get supplementation and sort it out the better. I can honestly say that getting my Vitamin D levels sorted was the single most dramatic change in my health after being diagnosed. It sorted out my hypothyroid issues and removed the chronic fatigue symptoms I'd been suffering with for months beforehand, lessened depression and many other benefits. I'd also been on a calorie controlled diet for 6 months beforehand without losing weight - as soon as I got my Vitamin D sorted, I started losing weight. No wonder they call it the sunshine vitamin - it was like having the lights turned on for me
I think I will take 2 mcg and then have a blood test in a months time and see what happens. I drank a load of water this morning. I think it's a mixture of so many things going on, but I felt a bit better with more water. I stopped drinking tea because of the diet and I didn't replace it. I find if I drink water I need to wee all the time, but I think I would prefer that to the way I'm feeling. Too much going on ATM.I was told to take 2,000iu per day. I took that for about 6 months and then was re-tested. My levels were OK, so GP said to drop it to 1,000iu per day. I then also started getting regular sun exposure for at least 20 minutes each fine day. Now I vary the level based on how much sun exposure/what season it is as I like to keep topped up.
These days I take a combo capsule of D3 & K2 together in liquid (olive oil) form (since I found out about their synergistic nature) but initially was just on tablets from the chemist.
Nothing like a year to feel better. I felt better very quickly, even before I got my BG under control.
It said that 25 mcg was 1000 IU . Thanks for your help. Just want to feel normal again.I've never heard of any measurement for Vitamin D3 besides iu/international units. It's important that it's Vitamin D3.
Glad that you're feeling better. Hydration is very important, so good that you're upping your fluids.
Hi there. Am assuming you mean LCHF? Would recommend the following website:
http://www.dietdoctor.com
The guy who writes this blog is a Swedish doc specialising in obesity and diabetes.
This is the diet I follow. I need to lose weight but not everyone who follows it is diabetic or needing to lose weight. I don't weigh anything. I don't eat starchy carbs ie rice, pots, pasta or bread. Nor do I have cake or biscuits unless it's a special occasion.
I start my day with bacon or sausage (97% meat) and egg.
I then have tapas style lunch ie mini sausages, salami, olives, bits of cheese, cherry tomatoes.
Dinner is meat or fish with salad or veggies.
Sometimes I have a small handful of berries or make my own ice cream with frozen berries and cream.
You must drink gallons of water.
2 squares of 70% choc every evening. A couple of glasses of white per week.
Hope this helps.
Hello Scandichic, this sounds like my ideal diet! however, have you had your cholesterol monitored and if so, has it gone up or remained Ok? I'm overweight and now trying to cut down on my carbs and get better control for my T1 diabetes. I love all the things you eat. How come you have to drink gallons of water though?
You lose a lot of water. Though I'm finding I'm unwell it cannot be certain it's from this diet. I suggest giving it a go. It def had a lot of benefits for me tooHello Scandichic, this sounds like my ideal diet! however, have you had your cholesterol monitored and if so, has it gone up or remained Ok?
