This has become a bit of a saga... the nice people at Roche customer services sent me a freebie meter and some hardware and software to put the results on my computer.

I have been testing several times a day for just over 3 weeks.

The infra red cable could not be fitted to my PC as it was an old fashioned port. So I emailed the nice people at Roche to explain my problem and a couple of days later got an email saying they would post me a USB port.

2 weeks later it still hadn't arrived, but I'm clocking up the tests. I call the nice people at Roche and explain I have not had the new infra red cable. The nice man explains that it is an adapter rather than a cable and they can't quite work out what has happened to it. He offered to sell me some new software and a USB cable for £15 :|

Today a cable adapter arrived.

I have spent the last hour downloading the software and trying to get the sodding meter and the infra red device to talk to each other. I couldn't even get the meter to switch in to the data transfer mode, no matter how long I pushed the buttons.

Once I managed to get it switched to the right mode, the software can't seem to find it. Then it switches itself off and I can't get it to open in to the right mode.

The progamme seems to have opened up okay, I think the meter is the problem.

Does this sound familar to anyone? Do I need to hit the meter with something hard (like my physics teacher used to recommend for sensitive instruments) or is there another solution?

And another thing... the green light on the front of the infra red device, is this supposed to light up? It isn't lit up. Might this be the problem?

Last twice I have tried, the meter has switched straight in to data transfer mode :| :?:

Hi Spiral.

Language....tut, tut .

I think you may have the same problem I had. I eventually found that I had to hold the meter about 2 inches in front of the IR device before it would transmit. Any further away and it doesn't work !

Ken.

I'm not convinced there is any power going to the infra red device. The green light isn't on.

The meter is still being temperamental about switching in to data transfer mode. I thnk it falls asleep because there is nothing happening with the reader.

I have plugged and unplugged the USB and screweed and unscrewed the adaptor thingy. I'm about to go to find my big stick to reprogram the bl**dy things.

I have had a closer look at the adaptor and see tiny red and green lights on that too. They are not lit up either. I suspect the adaptor may be the problem.

B*gg*r*t**n!

I wonder if it was damaged during delivery. My postman had forced it through the letterbox and the envelope was ripped and the packaging dented :?

The lights only come on when the IR detects the meter and data is being transmitted, the rest of the time they are off. It took me a while to get it to work. If you want pm me later today and I will talk you through the setup.

Ken.

I had a similar experience when they kindly sent me the IR input device, as I didn't have a serial port I too asked for an adaptor and they said they would post me one, But they actually sent me another IR device by mistake  So I bought an adaptor off eBay for about £5.

Mine was a tad difficult get to the IR device to communicate with my meter but this is what I did and it works fine.

Angle the IR device downwards, it swivels on its stand, place a pen/pencil about 3" from the IR device. Press both arrow keys on the meter and hold them down until a series of moving chevrons (arrows) appears on the screen. Then prop the meter on the pen so that it is 'looking up' towards the IR device. After a few seconds the light on the IR device will light telling you that the data is being uploaded. Sorted.......

As I now have a second IR device that is surplus to requirements, if after trying my suggestions yours still wont work, PM me your name and address and I will happily post it to you :)

Hi rluscombe

I didnt mention in my last post that you have to open the compass software before the IR device will activate (i think) If you set up the device and your meter so they are looking at each other with the meter in transfer mode ie. the moving chevrons are displayed, then open compass and on the first page click on 'DOWNLOAD METER - Download data from your meter' and it should then start the process.

Good luck :)

Hi.

The advice you have been given is all correct.

I use this and the meter has to be directly infront of the device and it will only detect the meter if it is no more than a couple of inches away. As stated previously, the lights only work when the meter is detected and data starts to transmit. It took ages before I got mine to work. As Sid says start the software and then press both buttons together on your meter, then hold it as close to the device as you can once the arrows are flashing. That's it really.

If you are still having a problem then phone the Accu-Chek Customer Careline and ask for advice there.

Maybe I'm impatient, but I tried this originally, couldn't get anything to communicate, gave up and did a little spreadsheet to give me the info and graph.

When they sent me a new Nano (nice and small) I paid £15 for their new software and reader......it works fine, but I still do the spreadsheet as it seems easier for me to interpret the data, somehow - maybe it's just that you relate to it more if you do some work! Also, with digital cameras, phones, ipods etc, I always seem to have to swap and change devices before I use it, and that's just a pain.

the lights on the usb cable dont flash

I assume you have the IR devise plugged into a serial to usb adaptor and then the usb lead plugged into your pc?

If this is the case is it plugged into an on board usp port or a usb hub as I have experienced problems with hubs.
Does any other usb device work plugged into the same usb port?
Have you tried a different usb port?

Can't think of anything else, sorry...

After I posted this I also spoke to somenoe on Accu Chek customer care. They have a dedicated IT section. Now, I called them when I was at work and didn't actually have the gubbins with me so the couldn't get me working, but he did explain what needed to happen.

Apparently, the problem is that the programme has to be allocated to a particular port and then it will all work properly, and this has to happen via the my computer panel. The IT chap offered to talk me through this when I got home, but due to a large amount of recent stress I have not yet called him to get the help.

The IT helpline is accessed via the general customer care number above, but you need to ask for IT help. The IT chaps are working in to the evening and on Saturday mornings.

I am now back with the program after a minor lapse over the end of last week and will be getting them to get my monitor plumbed in to the PC on Saturday morning.
