Acid Reflux

I saw someone mention this on another thread, but didn't want to hijack it.

I suffered for several years with acid reflux (or at least symptoms of it) and had lots of attempts at trying to work out what was causing it. At one stage (about 2 years ago) I convinced myself I had some sort of cancer of the gut and my doctor referred me for a endoscopy (probably just to shut me up). I was drinking Gaviscon straight from the large bottles and was on a huge dose of Omeprozole for about 18 months.

I realised a few months ago that I'd been feeling fine and without the painful belching I used to have, so I stopped taking the Omeprozole (which I'd tried to do before). So far - no recurrence - maybe the Omeprozole finally fixed it, or could this be another symptom of the Diabetes that has been resolved by reducing my numbers.

That's great Swimmer. Not as extreme but I use to keep the Rennie factories in full production but since the change to LCHF very few have been required. I also use to get occasional dreadful stomach aches and would sit in a hot bath just to relieve the pain. Again gone.
I'm more convinced it's the dietary changes than blood levels though simply because I had the problems for years prior to diagnosis.

I agree with xyzzy. I was taking 2 Omeprozole a day for years ( I should have only been taking 1 a day) but since I have went LCHF I have cut it down to 1 a day. Love to stop them altogether, but at leats Im heading in the right direction

Yep, another pre-low carb diet, sufferer here.
Completely gone now apart from one very scary night the day my grandson was born (at home).
I ate some Minstrels and went to bed shortly afterwards. I woke up having actually inhaled some of my stomach contents and I can tell you, I was terrified.

Not one little hint of reflux since.

Me to not taken my Omeprozole for the last 6 weeks. I have an hiatus hernia which was diagnosed, but since I have changed my diet indigestion has gone so I don't think Diabetes has anything to do with it more poor diet. Another bunch of pills I have eased back on are my Co-codamol 30-500mg, I used to have about 4 on good day and 6 on bad day, but now I only seem to need the 2 in morning to ease my back which is long standing injury seems the exercise and maybe diet are playing a part there to?

Diet certainly does play a big part, like you I was diagnosed with HH and use to take one Lansoprazole each day then once it had settled down started to take one every other day, since eliminating caffeine and acidic foods I hardly ever need the lansoprazole now, I find if I over-indulge on the wine or eat too much then the acid can come back with a vengeance though.

Thats great news swimmer, that was a long time of pain and worry that you went through. I have stomach problems, vomiting in the past, upper abdominal pain, lots of different things going on. I manged to get an appointment to see my dr at 4pm today, I am also on Omperzole which does help, but I still don't know what it is ( some suggested Coeliac disease, have you been tested for that? Did your dr actually say you suffered from Acid Reflux as there are a few conditions that have very similar symptoms :?
I hope your better health continues :D

Hi RRB,

I don't think I was tested for Coeliac, though my DSN is a Coeliac and would, I think, have suggested it if she thought it relevant.
I never got a diagnosis - the endoscopy found out nothing. except that I can develop quite a temper when an inexperienced Antipodean puts 3 feet of drain rodding apparatus down my gullet.

The Acid Reflux diagnosis was based on symptoms rather than a proper diagnosis.

OMG  what a horrible experience to go through, no wonder you had a temper, I would be pretty peed of as well. I was just wondering if you had nausea as well, I have that all the time, sometimes mild, sometimes severe.

I have to agree with the overindulgence, I had a rough night on Thursday all because, I put chilly source on my Lamb and salad Kebab, played havoc with the old plumbing and the indigestion came back with a vengeance, managed to ease it with some Gaviscon. Indigestion can come back if I go mad with the dairy stuff too, especially the cream. It's a fine line we walk

Have to say I was told I had a hiatus hernia that was causing all of the above symptoms a couple of years ago, but have recently been taken off Exanatide and Gliclazide and haven't taken Omeprazole or Gaviscon for about six weeks now!!!!

what level of carb are you eating? In Dr. Wolfgang Lutz's[Life without Bread] practice in Austria, he found that a low grain/low carb diet almost always stopped acid reflux.

My hubby isn't db but by default of my diagnosis has changed his diet to much lower carb. Gaviscon sales have plummeted as a result.

He too will suffer if he has too much vino b4 bed.

Simon, I have been meaning to post this and I keep forgetting. I told my GP on Wednesday what you had said about acid reflux. He asked if I had had any episodes, but when I am medicated I never do, come off the meds and oh boy do I know about it. Anyway, a joint decision based on what you said he has taken me from 30mg a day to a 15mg a day 'maintenance dose' to see how I get on. So I just want to say thank you for this thread, and the idea it gave me to speak with my Doctor.

Hey, you're most welcome. The more we all talk about weird things that may or not be related to the DB, the more we seem to learn how connected it all is.

+1 so very true. Thanks again.

My wife had the same experience. She had reflux and other gastro problems which went away after she had eaten a very low carb diet for a while (which she does in support of me, since she is not a diabetic). I used to have to take antacids nightly and no longer need to.
