Active insulin time

Hi

My name is Jo and I am mum to Rhiannon who is 6 years old. She was diagnosed with Type 1 at 2 years old. Rhiannon is currently on the Accu-Check Combo pump which we have had since July 2009.

I just wondered what ‘active insulin time’ you have programmed into your pumps? Rhiannon’s pump is currently set to 4 hours active time and she uses Novo Rapid. I have a suspicion that here insulin is stacking, she has quite a few snacks throughout the day and I think the insulin is over lapping and is possibly the reason why she is have a few hypo's before lunch. I believe we have been compensating by adjusting her bolus carb ratio time blocks which are set for when she usually snacks and feel we may be masking the problem which is probably the ‘active insulin time’. We are considering amending the 'active insulin time' to 5 hours and are preparing for the knock-on effect this will have on her bolus or even basal settings.

Thanks
Jo

hello

i believe there is a way to check how long it last dont quote me cos i have never done it but i think its something to do with eating and bolusing and then monitoring the bloods to see when they level out of course it does mean that ur basal rate has to be correct .

im sure i have read this in the book i have but im sure there will be someone along who can advise u furthur as we only started on our pump this week

good luck hope u get it sorted

Hi,

I was told on the DAFNE course that novorapid can last from 2-5 hours, i also use 4 hours as a guideline as this seems to work fine for me and i dont think i've experienced the 'stacking effect' but maybe 5 hours would be better for you to avoid those hypo's, i would also try avoiding snacks is possible so you know for definate :)

I spent ages trying to work out my active insulin time and came up with 5 hours - Novorapid, I have recently switched to Apidra and changed the setting to 4 hours.

Mine was originally set up to 4 hours, as I was getting stacking of insulin. However my consultant advised two things, and they have worked good for me...
Change my insulin active time to 5 hours, and to change the times of when I was eating so that they are 5 hours apart. I was eating at 9am breakfast and lunch at 12. Since I have changed my main meals (so to speak) to 5 hours apart and feel my levels are normally much better for doing so.
