Hi I really like the sound of low carb and feel it's a healthy option however I feel a little overwhelmed. Can anyone suggest a book/articles to help get me started?

I found dietdoctor.com very useful. Also there is a thread Viv's modified Atkins diet, that could help you get started.

I have been low carbing for over 6 months now, and loving the results. A really great book to start with is Dr Trudi Deakins 'Eat Fat' I think it is £10 on Amazon.... A step-by-Step guide to low carb living. Dr Trudi Deakin writes the NHS X-Pert Heath program, and trains the trainers. She herself is on a 82 % fat diet. Her book is an easy read, and explains everything simply and logically. I started before the book was published, but still found it interesting.

Thanks so much on amazon as we speak!

I have been following suggestions on the Paleo diet which is basically no grains but I have included full fat organic dairy which is not strictly Paleo. A good place to start if you are interested is: http://paleogrubs.com/ Bear in mind if you are looking at recipes that they do use honey / maple syrup / dates because it is natural sugar but still no good if you are diabetic! I have done some of their dessert recipes and used sweetener to make it more diabetic friendly. Not keen on using sweetener but can't go through life without something almost like cake!

Well I have just sat down with a cup of coffee with double cream, accompanied by an orange and sour cream 'muffin'. The recipe is here:
http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/orange_sourcream_cakes.html Some other good looking recipes on this site too - haven't tried them yet as have only just found it :). These muffins are a bit dry but flavoursome - am thinking they would make a good scone alternative with some clotted cream.

Another "vote" for the Trudi Deakin Eat Fat book suggested by @zand and @Ian DP . It will give you a good and simply explained guide to starting off on a low carb high(er) fat diet and also includes food lists and a few recipes. It's a useful guide to have around, and one I would have found useful when I was starting off.

I'd also recommend getting yourself a glucose meter if you haven't got one already, so you can see how various foods (low carb or not!) impact on your pre and post meal levels, and modify your new diet and shopping list accordingly. IMO a meter and the Deakin book are probably two of the most useful "weapons" in your war against diabetes.

Have a good look around the rest of the low carb area, as there's a good selection of members' recipes, and the "What have you eaten today" thread can give you some idea of what sort of things we eat on this style of diet.
