Advice for going onto INsulin Pump

Hi have done the DAFNE course but still getting high readings in the morning. Have started to discuss going onto the insulin pump but not seriously. Can anyone who has done the DAFNE course and now on an Insulin pump give me the pros and cons of having one. One of my biggest fears is it coming out in the middle of the night. Thanks

Hi

I've been using the accu-chek combo since August, it's great for flexibility, as in - being able to eat what you want when you want. A revelation for me, as I used to use too much background insulin in order to 'graze' but often ended up hypo and also feeding the background so not good for weight management! Other pros: only one needle every 2 days (sometimes longer depending on which canula you use), different basal rates for different periods of time (I personally haven't experimented much with this yet). The pump I use means I just pop the carb info into the meter and it advises how much to bolus. Then it delivers it thru Bluetooth, easy! Another pro for me was a return of hypo awareness, I had lost mine because I was spending a lot of time low...in the quest for good levels.

Cons: it's attached constantly (mine hasn't ever come out at night, it's usually hooked on me pj's or inside a vest. The only thing that 'bothers' me is that if there is an interruption of delivery, your bg can rise v sharply. because there's no background, this could end up in ketone territory fairly rapidly...but regular testing can identify this and you can spot it & deal with it. I always test on waking in case there has been a problem, but there hasn't been yet.

All in all, I wouldn't want to be without mine now!

Me too, I would never give it back.

Did pull one out once when not being careful but not at night time - also in summer (when its hot) I sleep with it in the bed beside me without any problems.
