Hi

I was diagnosed a few weeks ago, as yet i have no idea if it's type 1 or 2 but i am down as Insulin dependent (if that makes a difference) have a meeting with specialist Wednesday so hoping it will answer some questions.
I had a meeting with the hospital Nutrionist but am now left with more questions than answers, after some research on this forum and other places i went armed with questions regarding simple/complex carbs, the G.I food number thing etc etc. I was told to forget all i had read and just give myself more insulin to cover what i eat but to limit my carb intake to 300 per day if possible ( based on her numbers of 50% of calories from carbs from a 2500 calorie a day figure). I realise i am not the easiest person to work something out for as i eat no vegies or fruit whatsoever but is this really the best advice? and is there a long term down side to this? Apart from the weight gain 3kg in 3 weeks Grrrr

Any suggestions, advice or comments welcome :)

Your diagnosis is important to you, it's your health and the way the doctors will treat you will depend upon the actual diagnosis. It seems that they are getting there but is it quick enough?

T1 and T2 use insulin, and there are other sorts of diabetes that also need insulin.

It is not policy on this forum to suggest anything that may contradict what your medical advisors have told you to do.

I will, however give you some infomation regarding my own situation, as a T2, if I had followed the advice I was given regarding diet I would certainly not have acheived a 5% HbA1c at my last test.

If I were you I would push for a firm diagnosis, I would also "eat to my meter" and avoid food that gives a "spike" or rapid rise in BGs. As to what you eat and how many carbs and calories you have each day must be decided in consulatation with your medical advisors. I went through this consultation and decided to do my own thing. Only you can decide what you will do.

Finally, you have to take control of your diabetes, make your own decisions based on the best advice, and never "take your eye off the ball".

Good advice...best advice possible is to take your own full responsibilty for your diabets for YOUR body and YOUR needs. I am not discrediting HCP's at all, please don't get me wrong...however, from all statistics, an average can be achieved for advice.....you could be more one side of the average or the other side of the average.

Agree totally with the previous posting by Hallii. From my experience though (size 10, 5'5" and female and lean and mean)-300 carbs a day would pile on at least 4lbs a week on to me. I rarely eat above 100 carbs a day.

Having a look at the 'How many carbs do you eat posting and poll' is quite interesting.....certainly 300g CHO level is not a figure listed!!!!!

It will all go along with your current size, whether you need to lose or gain weight, your age, your activitys and your lifestyles...and that is why only YOU can decide what is the best average CHO per day for you.

Your HCP's can only give an average figure to work on..and it all depends how 'average' you are......good luck anyway, you will find some great help here...and you will always get some good support and advice...
